Overview

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our staff of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and internationally from our offices in New York; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Santa Monica; San Francisco; Bozeman, Montana; and Beijing.

Position Summary
 
NRDC is seeking a Winter Intern to work with our Nature Program in NRDC’s Northern Rockies Office in Bozeman, Montana. This internship will support NRDC’s advocacy work on wildlife and other conservation issues in the Northern Rockies, focusing on keystone species protection and facilitating the recovery of animals like wolves and grizzly bears. This will include supporting NRDC Northern Rockies staff during the 2023 Montana State Legislature by tracking key wildlife bills, conducting background research, and monitoring hearings. The intern will have the opportunity to meet and learn from NRDC wildlife staff as well as participate in conversations with key wildlife conservation partners. The internship will begin January 1, 2023 or soon thereafter, and will last 10 weeks. It is a 35-hour-per-week position and includes a stipend amounting to $600 per week for undergrduate students and $1,000 per week for graduate students. We strongly encourage applicants who reside in or are passionate about Montana or the larger Northern Rockies region. A remote work arrangement will be offered for this position.

Responsibilities

• Research factual, science, and policy issues relevant to NRDC’s wildlife advocacy and other conservation issues;
• Draft, proofread, and edit documents (e.g., research memoranda);
• Help inform future wildlife conservation efforts; and
• Gain an understanding of wildlife conservation work by assisting Nature program staff with various projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience;

• Resourceful, able to manage multiple projects, and motivated to succeed;

• Excellent written and verbal communications skills;

• An interest in relationship building and learning from diverse perspectives in the wildlife community;

• A passion for conservation issues in the West and commitment to NRDC’s values and mission.

Since March 2020, NRDC’s offices have been closed and are currently in a phased reopening process due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You will be associated with the Bozeman office, but until we fully re-open, we will continue to support NRDCers with remote working arrangements.

NRDC will supplement outside funding to ensure interns receive $600/week for undergraduate student interns and $1,000/week for graduate student interns.
