The diverse educational initiatives, including our High School Semester and Summer Term, Deep Creek Middle School, Elementary Learning Center, and our Community Engagement and Partnerships, deliver unique educational journeys in conjunction with the authentic and meaningful work our organization undertakes in research and sustainable development at the Cape Eleuthera Institute, our research, and innovation hub. We are reimagining what education is for, and redesigning how education is delivered.
Job Summary
The Island School is seeking a leader who will be responsible for Wellness, Medical and Crisis Response needs on our campus in The Bahamas. Reporting to the Director of Risk Management and Expeditionary Programs, the ideal candidate will have experience leading a small team of medical and mental health professionals and will carry current qualification as a Paramedic, or above. Located on the Island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas, the Island School and Cape Eleuthera Institute operate year round offering educational programs to clients of all ages. Our semester-long educational programs involve students here for 100 days, following an academic curriculum that involves SCUBA, sailing and kayaking expeditions along with a rigorous physical activity schedule. In addition, students and staff are actively involved in marine research and education involving corals, turtles, sharks etc. The Wellness Team provides education and training for staff and students as well as acute care for this population. With faculty and guests, we look after clients from 2 years old to 80. Care is also provided on occasion to the communities of South Eleuthera on a larger scale in conjunction with local physicians, and clinics. Eleuthera is a remote island with no hospital and limited medical resources. The nature of the care and work we do reflects this challenging yet exciting environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Oversee the health and well-being of The Island School community and arrange for more definitive care as necessary
Oversee the day-to-day operations of the wellness center, including providing first aid, supporting students who are experiencing illness, medication administration, communicating with teachers, etc
Lead, train and work alongside a small team of wellness center staff as well as a community of WFR trained faculty
Coordinate with local physicians or telemedicine consultation to provide appropriate treatment for patients
Identify emergency response situations and lead the response including patient care, evacuation and communication
In cooperation with the Director of Risk Management, support the proactive and ongoing development and implementation of health and safety protocols across all of our programs and operations
Ensure all emergency response protocols, resources and systems are functioning and look for opportunities to improve those systems
Inventory, inspect and order medical /emergency supplies and update necessary documentation.
Facilitate periodic training opportunities for staff, which may include basic First Aid/CPR training and emergency response scenarios.
Work with local health professionals in medical outreach efforts and continue to cultivate effective partnerships in support of the well being of our community as well as the communities of South Eleuthera
Liaise with and keep parents and other relevant stakeholders informed of students’ medical conditions, treatment and future needs
Support the admissions process for residential students by conducting medical interviews with students/families before arrival
Serve as medic on call along with other staff from the Wellness Center to provide ongoing medical response
