What is the opportunity?

The Web Developer is responsible for overseeing, building, implementing, maintaining, and expanding the ministry’s website and other digital outreach initiatives. This role will maintain and grow an online presence to engage new and existing audiences, educate them about the global water crisis, and invite them into the ministry’s work. As part of the Marketing and Communications Department, the Web Developer will work closely with the Marketing, Content, Creative, and PR Teams. He or she will also collaborate across departments, with support and guidance from the IT Department.

This individual must be creative, experienced, and capable of working both independently and collaboratively. He or she will possess an established history of web development, coding, scripting, and markup. The Web Developer position will report to the Marketing Director and can be located at Water Mission’s headquarters in N. Charleston, SC, or remotely with minimal travel requirements.

A successful Web Developer will:

General Duties

  • Maintain a strong Christian witness to colleagues, vendors, donors, volunteers, those we serve, and the general public.
  • Maintain basic knowledge about the global water crisis and Water Mission’s organizational objectives, programmatic strategies, projects, and activities. Stay informed of local, regional, national, and global news and issues to support the Marketing & Communications department effectively.
  • Support, maintain, and expand Water Mission’s external Work with our hosting vendor to maintain security and monitor uptime.
  • Understand, improve, and expand access to Water Mission’s internal monitoring web applications.
  • Build and deliver marketing email campaigns and report on their impact and engagement.
  • Develop, maintain, and track departmental and ministry projects in Smartsheet.
  • Effectively communicate the mission and scope of Water Mission to various audiences.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Website Development and Maintenance

  • Build and refresh content pages, campaign pages, registration forms, surveys, and donation forms. Expand sections for event promotion and create other additions to the site as needed.
  • Assist the PR team to build and publish blog posts and press releases.
  • Update navigation, headers, and footers as needed.
  • Update home page announcements to promote campaigns or disaster responses.
  • Track, monitor, and report on traffic, bounce rate, conversation, and other metrics.
  • Monitor uptime and security with the ministry’s web host.
  • Review website change requests and propose solutions based on department strategy.
  • Collaborate with the Brand Manager to ensure the website and email adheres to Water Mission’s brand.

Email Marketing

  • Build mailing lists for strategic communications.
  • Design and implement direct email marketing campaigns.
  • Upgrade email templates using graphics, personalization, and advanced features. Prioritize mobile-friendly email templates and layouts while innovating through the latest technologies.
  • Ensure prompt and accurate delivery to clients.
  • Maintain email database for lead generation.
  • Analyze campaign performance and suggest improvements. Report on giving revenue generated from email marketing efforts.
  • Ensure emails follow industry policies and best practices.

What is required?

  • Personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
  • Alignment with Water Mission’s Statement of Faith and core values of Love, Excellence, and Integrity.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Two to four years of experience in web development, software development, web programming, or web design.
  • In-depth knowledge of modern HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
  • Familiarity with web-based programming (such as PHP or Ruby on Rails) language preferred.
  • Knowledge of Search Engine Optimization process.
  • Proficiency in modern content management systems. Familiarity with WordPress preferred.
  • Ability to receive and rapidly respond to direction and shifting project requirements.
  • Ability to excel in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities while maintaining a positive team approach with internal and external partners.
  • Adept at accepting and giving constructive feedback.
  • Flexibility to work periodic nights and weekends as required for ministry operations.
  • Commitment to the values and mission of the organization and ending the global water crisis.
  • Home internet bandwidth strong enough to support video conferencing and other job-related responsibilities is required.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.
