Waste Management Technician

Job Summary

The Waste Management Technician will serve as a member of the Facilities team and provide support across all areas of facilities maintenance. A primary role will include applying knowledge and principles of zero-waste, sustainability, logistics and supply chain management to ensure proper and safe operation of The Island School waste portfolio. They will serve as the key person in waste management for The Island School campuses. Operating the sustainable waste management portfolio of The Island School includes sorting and recycling stations for solid waste, shredding services and incineration. The Waste Management Technician will work collaboratively with the research & innovation team as well as with students and education teams throughout The Island School, and will report directly to the Director of Facilities and Infrastructure.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work as a member of the facilities team, providing general support in all areas as directed by your supervisor. Build skills and capacity in plumbing, electrical, general carpentry and beyond
  • Oversee campus wide pest control strategies including ants, cockroaches, rodents, termites etc.
  • Lead the daily operations of the Tingum Center/ campus Recycling Center and waste disposal site, ensuring the Center is well maintained, organized and functional at all times
  • Uphold and enforce health & safety guidelines in regard to waste management
  • Perform duties relative to waste management operations across The Island School Campuses (including DCMS) including waste disposal, sorting, container inventory control,  auditing and tracking, storage control, logistics, transportation, recycling troubleshooting and other related functions
  • Process solid, biohazard and approved chemical waste by incineration
  • Management of all waste water systems (septic tanks, biodigester, “Poo Poo Garden”)
  • Daily removal and sorting of all waste (recycled and refurbished) across campus
  • Facilitate the processing methods or applicable technologies for recyclable waste (aluminum, paper & cardboard, plastics, glass, e-waste)
  • Manage the storage, handling and transportation of motor oil and liquid chemical waste
  • Provide support to CEI Sustainable Waste Management research and participate in waste education with students, visitors and other community partners
  • Collect data as assigned by the Research and Innovation teams related to waste management and auditing of waste production.
  • Recommend changes and/or improvements to the waste management system as needed and coordinate implementation with the Assistant Director of Research and Innovation and the Director of Facilities and Infrastructure
  • Provide support to other Facilities team and projects where needed
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Experience and Skills

    • Previous experience in some sort of trade preferred, to include such things as solid or hazardous waste management, environmental science, plumbing, carpentry and/or auto mechanics.
    • Working knowledge of incineration and waste-to-energy systems
    • Ability to understand and adhere to health & safety protocols, and local waste regulations and policies
    • Mechanical aptitude and repair skills
    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, email, written, phone)
    • Working competency of Google Suite and Microsoft Office applications
    • Proven  ability to multitask and work independently with a strong commitment to safety and environmental protection.
  • Adaptability

    • Must be able to work with chemical, biohazardous and unsorted mixed solid waste.
    • Must be able to work in hot conditions.
    • Must be able to survive and thrive in a small, tight-knit, “green”, sustainable campus community, located in a remote part of The Bahamas with a “can-do” attitude to address challenges and opportunities of such a place.
  • Preferred Certifications/Abilities

    • OSHA, WBGx waste management or equivalent certification
    • Valid Driver's license
    • Ability to lift and carry at least 50 lbs
