Urban Forestry Director

One Tree Planted is a US-based 501(c)(3) non-profit focused on global reforestation. As an environmental charity, we are dedicated to making it easier for individuals and businesses to give back to the environment, create a healthier climate, protect biodiversity, and help reforestation efforts around the world. All by planting trees!

The ideal start date for this position is as soon as possible.

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Director of Urban Forestry is responsible for the programmatic oversight and administration of the Urban Forestry Program, overseeing a portfolio of global urban tree planting projects and advancing organizational goals with a network of planting partners, donors and peer organizations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION

PROGRAM PLANNING AND ADMINISTRATION

  • Create and implement an annual strategic plan; monitor program goals and accomplishments. Coordinate closely with other departments within the organization to support fundraising and marketing efforts to reach target funding goals. Serve as the technical lead and support fundraising and philanthropy on donor calls.
  • Plan and monitor annual budget and revenue; plan and prioritize project payments for the program.  Collaborate with other departments to improve processes and workflow.
  • Support urban forestry staff in sourcing, implementing and monitoring projects.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

Responsible for the creation, organization, execution and completion of all projects including international (outside of the U.S). urban forestry projects, including:

  • Identification of projects: Review project proposal submissions through AirTable for specific regions internally with One Tree Planted staff; Identify and manage potential risks and liabilities of projects; Negotiate project budgets with planting partners; Assess partners’ current maintenance and monitoring practices internally; Spearhead initial and follow-up questions with planting partners via direct phone calls and/or Zoom meetings; Consistently seek out new partnerships for expansion with organized phone calls, Zoom meetings, and email communication.

  • Contracts: Setting targets for milestones; adhering to deadlines and allocating resources; Assist in the definition of project scope and goals; with planting partners, agree on the number and species of trees, breakdown of budget, geographic location, and finalize time frame of project; Set deadlines for the payment schedule based on planting season schedule and on the basis of donation source; Draft agreements for planting partner; Upload finalized executable agreement in PandaDocs for signature and assure the signing by all parties; File finalized agreements on all required platforms (e.g., AirTable, Salesforce, etc.); Update partner databases.

  • Budgets/Payment processes: Ensure timely payments to planting partners; Monitor project budgets and review expenditure reports of each project; Acquire banking information and advice accounts payable of funds to be sent on schedule**.**

  • Active projects: Monitor progress and perform quality control on the tree planting project throughout development to maintain the standards expected; Update required information in Airtable and Salesforce (e.g., project description, number of trees, cost per tree, biodiversity benefits, community benefits, hectares restored); Adjust schedules and targets of the project, as needed; Maintain close working relationships with all planting partners and stakeholders; In-person, on-site visits with planting partners to monitor progress and build relationships.

  • Reporting and documentation: Assess updates and end of project reports submitted by the partner; Motivate people involved in the project to complete tasks on time; Share information internally for marketing requests and donor update emails to keep stakeholders informed.

C****ORPORATE/INDIVIDUAL ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT

  • Serve as a point of contact for any inquiries for Urban Forestry projects;
  • Manage project portfolios, event coordination etc. for key urban forestry donors (i.e. Microsoft, FedEx etc.); serve as the urban forestry lead with corporate donors and across the organization to keep partnerships aligned with One Tree Planted goals.
  • Seek out new projects when required by corporate donors.

PROGRAM LEADERSHIP

  • Participate/lead on state, regional and national working groups related to urban and community forestry programs, including the Tree Equity Alliance and other strategic partnerships.
  • Present at conferences as a thought-leader in the field of urban forestry, and to develop and strengthen partnerships.

SUPERVISION OF STAFF

  • This position supervises, evaluates and promotes development of an urban forestry project manager and urban forestry project coordinator.
  • Oversees day-to-day operation, provides guidance and monitors target accomplishments.
  • This position conducts formal performance reviews, identifies and provides training and mentors staff.

EVENT SUPPORT

  • Provide support for both big-picture, long-term projects as well as single-day employee engagement events and other community-based initiatives. This position has provided flexible, as-needed, ad-hoc support for events, community initiatives, or other tasks.
  • Provide guidance on the technical design of events and community initiatives.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Environmental or forestry engineering, Environmental Science and related areas.
  • Master’s degree would be highly desirable and a differential.

RELATED EXPERIENCE:

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in the field of urban forestry;
  • 3-5+ years program management experience;
  • ISA Certified Arborist.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and advance organizational mission with staff and partners.
  • Supervisory experience preferred, with a demonstrated ability to train and mentor staff
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excited to speak to lots of different people every day, from Fortune 500 companies to small community groups.
  • Experience in organizing, developing and delivering public presentations, workshops, events and publications, plus other informational and educational activities
  • Proficient with Google Suite, and knowledgeable of platforms such as Salesforce, Airtable, ClickUp, Smugmug, Zoom, and Canva is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote office setting while leading a team and balancing multiple priorities.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks simultaneously and creatively address challenges
  • Collegial personality and team player, as well as willingness to learn and approach problems differently

COMPENSATION:  Typical starting range will be based on skills and experience. Annual performance increase may be available but not guaranteed.
