The Institute for War & Peace Reporting (IWPR) works with media and civil society to promote democratic values, peace building, and good governance in conflict-affected and fragile states. Since our founding during the Balkans conflict in 1991, IWPR has helped civic activists, human rights defenders, women’s rights advocates, and independent journalists make their voices heard and drive positive change in MENA, Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. We currently work in nearly 30 countries to build local capacities, strengthen civil society and media organisations, and empower civic actors to remove barriers to free expression and to promote citizen engagement and public dialogue.

We are seeking for individuals and organizations to implement several activities under the Consortium to Support Independent Journalism in Latin America (CAPIR) project.

The Consortium to Support Independent Journalism in the Region (CAPIR) is receiving applications from individuals and organizations specialized in the areas listed below to train and mentor journalists from several Latin American countries.

Applicants may express interest in providing services for one or more of the areas below, depending on their expertise and availability. More than one candidate may be selected for each area.

Areas of Expertise:

  1. Deliver in-person workshop on open-source intelligence for 12 journalists from Central America and provide virtual, individual mentoring sessions on demand. The workshop is expected to take place in February in Guatemala.
  2. Investigative journalists and editors with extensive experience in Honduras, Guatemala, and/or El Salvador to mentor investigative teams working on corruption and organized crime stories throughout 2023.
  3. Digital security experts with extensive experience training and supporting journalists and news outlets in Latin America to train and work with the teams in risk assessments, building security protocols and providing individualized mentorship or emergency support if/when needed, throughout 2023.
  4. Disinformation experts specialized in the use of digital tools to identify and analyze disinformation patterns in Central America, throughout 2023.

For individuals:

Education: Social sciences, communication, journalism, or similar areas.

Experience:  A solid record of training and working in investigative journalism in Central America, particularly on corruption and organized crime. Experience in the support and development of activities aimed at strengthening capacities, mentoring skills, and implementation of specific methodologies and tools is a must in investigative journalism, disinformation analysis, and/or digital security.

Language requirements: Fluent Spanish essential.  English a bonus.

Travel: Within Central America if needed.

Other requirements: Good knowledge of the sociopolitical and media context of Central  America.

For organizations:

Experience: Extensive experience facilitating training and mentoring to journalists in Latin America, especially in topics such as investigative journalism, open-source intelligence, digital security, countering disinformation, and collaborative cross-border journalistic investigations. Solid record of collaboration in similar activities with other organizations, journalists, and media outlets in Central America.

Language: Fluent Spanish essential.  English a bonus.

Travel: Within Central America if needed.

Other requirements: The organization should have a legal registration in the country of operation.
