Teacher, Summer Academy Program
Temporary: 32 hours/Week, June 5 - July 20, 2023 (closed July 3rd and 4th)
Schedule: 7:30am-4:30pm, Monday through Thursday
JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Sacred Heart Community Service, located in San José, CA, is looking for a Summer Academy Teacher, for our Summer Academy program to analyze and improve programs that stabilize individuals and families facing
severe economic hardship while creating opportunities for members to get involved to change the conditions
in their lives. This individual must be highly organized, possess an ability to work flexibly and creatively,
demonstrate superior communication skills, and be able to understand and analyze program data in order to
present them to our community and funders. The ideal candidate must be equally committed to our vision of a
community united to ensure every child and adult is free from poverty, an approach of driving policy change
through transformational leadership development, and developing programs through an anti-racism and
anti-oppression worldview. For over 58 years, SHCS has been one of the leading institutions addressing poverty in
Santa Clara County through a strategy that combines addressing the consequences of poverty through impactful
programs while building power with people to push for systemic change.
POSITION SUMMARY:
For 21 years, Sacred Heart Community Service has offered Summer Academy (SA), which is a 5-week, all-day program that serves 100 3rd-6th graders from the Washington/Guadalupe neighborhood of San Jose at the Sacred Heart building in downtown San Jose. The program focuses on students’ academic, social and emotional development, and aims to reduce summer learning loss. Students are divided into groups based on age and each day work on math, language arts, science, technology, and enrichment (including subjects ranging from art to music to sports). Prior to starting the program, Sacred Heart receives information about each child’s report card and any relevant education/behavioral plan so they can emphasize particular subjects as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Program Coordination (60-65%)
● Provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education
● Design and deliver instructional plans that are focused on student mastery of curriculum goals
● Create and implement lesson plans for single subject classes for 3rd to 6th grade in accordance with the California Common Core Standards
● Utilize interactive, engaging teaching techniques aimed at improving knowledge and retention of age-appropriate concepts in each class
● Train, direct, and provide meaningful engagement opportunities for your volunteer class
● Use measurement tools to evaluate effectiveness of lesson plans and document improvements for future programmatic use
● Evaluate each student’s performance throughout the program and actively communicate with Program Manager and the students’ families as deemed appropriate to support them in maintaining their academic grade level
● Administer pre- and post-testing to track students’ progress
● Challenge and empower both youth and volunteers to think critically, to work together to design and lead activities, and to make positive choices
● Develop improvement plans for students who are underachieving academically
Leadership (20-25%)
● Support the planning and implementation of all SA activities
● Participate and contribute to professional development meetings with SA staff and volunteers aimed at working together to improve the quality and content of the Summer Academy
● Perform other duties as assigned
Administrative (10-15%)
● Develop, track, and manage the progress of students
● Submit a bi-weekly class curriculum to Summer Academy Site Lead
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
The Teacher Coordinator should have the following skills and experience:
● Strong commitment to our vision of a community united to ensure that every child and adult is free from poverty
● Education requirement:
o A minimum of 24 college units are required
o Specialty educational certificate in a related field or teaching credential preferred
o Strong academic background in related major
● Minimum of two years’ experience teaching 6- to 12-year old children
● Ability to multi-task and provide quick, professional responses
● Be detail-oriented and highly organized
● Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required
● Be flexible, compassionate, and have a supportive attitude
● Treat all students, volunteers, and staff with dignity, compassion, and respect while adhering to program rules and procedures
● Adhere to SHCS-mandated reporting policies and procedures and work with Summer Academy Site Lead to appropriately report any suspected child abuse or neglect
● Provide proof of a negative tuberculosis (TB) test
● Must complete a DMV and complete background check
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
● Bilingual in English and Spanish
● At least one year of supervisory experience
REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:
The Teacher Coordinator in the Summer Academy Program reports to the K-12 Education Programs Manager. This position is part-time, temporary and non-exempt.
COMPENSATION:
This temporary (June 5 - July 20, 2023), the position pays $25.80/hour. This position does not provide SHCS-sponsored benefits except as required by law.
