Overview
The Coastal Climate Resiliency Program (CCRP) reinforces the resiliency of coastal communities in the Dominican Republic (DR) due to the implementation of integrated strategies that combine innovating hands-on education, science, community development, youth empowerment, national policy, and law enforcement. Dominican and international partners work through a framework that improves the livelihoods of coastal populations while restoring and enhancing the environmental services of their coastal marine ecosystems. The goal of this program is to reduce local pressures on biodiversity in coastal marine ecosystems, while minimizing economic and cultural disruption to the communities that depend on those ecosystems. The program strives to build a nature-positive economy empowering coastal communities by enhancing behavioral change through environmental education. The key to success in resilience to climate change is the capacity of people, families, natural systems, businesses, and government, among others, to mitigate, adapt and recover from impacts and pressures, thus reducing extreme vulnerability and improving sustainability. With this focus on climate resilience, CCRP supports its partners by concentrating efforts on 3 basic objectives:
- Foster opportunities for Dominican youth to engage as emerging leaders in marine-coastal conservation and innovative science education through the Dominican Environmental Education Program (DEEP).
- Optimize the capacity of local institutions and organizations for the design and implementation of conservation, restoration, and environmental education programs and research.
- Provide strategic planning support to governmental institutions to improve resiliency and environmental education, promoting effective participation of all sectors in the national dialogue and in the design of public policies.
