Sustainable Food Teacher/Cook

Job Summary
This position facilitates the delivery of healthy food preparation and food services in support of the mission, vision and values of the organization and seeks to teach environmental wellness, sustainable practices and to promote local food sourcing.

Essential Dutes and Responsibilites

  • Prepare healthy local and diverse meals in accordance with standards of quality control,
    taste and presentation, using approved recipes and presentation guidelines
  • Deliver innovative menu items and encourage cultural food explorations with a focus on
    sustainable food sourcing at every opportunity and especially during Chef’s Choice days
  • Ensure that all food items are properly stored and maintained at safe temperature levels
    and are properly rotated, prepped and ready for service on each station
  • Strictly follow all food sanitation and safe food handling practices.
  • Inspect food deliveries for quality and quantity and report any matters of concern to the
    Kitchen Manager or Supervisor
  • Assist in the handling, portioning, safe storage and rotation of meat products from local
    suppliers
  • Assist with the unloading, cleanliness and orderly stock of food supplies for storeroom,
    cooler and walk-in freezer and any other food storage areas
  • Participate in routine weekly deep clean and sanitation of the kitchen, food service work
    stations and dining hall areas
  • Actively participate in daily cleaning rotations in Kitchen and Dining hall areas
  • Ensure compliance with proper and safe use of chemicals in the kitchen and dining hall
    areas
  • Promptly report any equipment malfunctions or hazardous issues to the Kitchen Manager
    or Supervisor
  • Using interaction with students and others as teaching moments by guiding thoughts and
    actions to encourage sustainable practices, environmental wellness, recycling
    opportunities
  • Ensuring daily awareness of special food needs or restrictions for clients and staff.
  • Ensuring the use of appropriate signage to identify potential food allergens for the safety
    and health of dining patrons
  • Assist with planning of local meal presentations as needed per semester and facilitating
    education on the importance of locally sourced healthy and nutritious meals
  • Provide catering support for functions and special events as directed by the Kitchen
    Manager or Supervisor
