Position Summary
To safely execute and help oversee Aullwood Audubon’s Summer Earth Adventures day camp for children preK-6th grade and work with the Manager of Public Programs to train and help coordinate Camp Counselors, Junior Camp Counselors, and volunteer Summer Earth Assistants. This position will be employed from May 1, 2023, through September 1, 2023, from Monday – Friday for 7-8 hours daily. Summer camp staff will be subject to any CDC, state, local, or Audubon guidelines for Covid-19 safety.
Compensation:
$17.50 / hour
Essential Functions
May - June:
- Coordinate camp registrations via CampDoc.
- Support marketing efforts for Summer Earth Adventures.
- If available, be part of the interview team for Camp Counselors, Junior Camp Counselors.
- Coordinate scholarship program with local schools, including arranging for transportation.
- Working on writing the summer camp curriculum, preparing materials needed for lessons, creating craft templates, and general preparation for the summer camp season.
- Assist with the training of remaining seasonal camp staff and volunteers once onboarded and familiarize them with summer camp procedures, curriculum, and protocols.
Summer:
- Acting as assistant Camp Director, overseeing the regular day-to-day camp programs, resolving minor daily issues, and running camp debriefs with camp staff.
- Setting up and cleaning up each day’s camp activities, planning and executing each weeklong camp session for their individual small group of campers, including teaching discovery hikes, pond explorations, live animal programs, nature crafts, and games, and making sure other camp staff is prepared for each day as well.
- Maintain the safety of all campers during their time at Summer Earth Adventures.
- Coordinate staffing for camper early drop-off and late pick-up.
- Maintain positive working relationships with summer campers, their parents and/or guardians, Aullwood Audubon full-time and seasonal staff, and volunteers.
- Assist with clean up and storage of camp supplies at end of camp; assist with camp evaluations.
- Special attention is to be taken for following all Audubon, State of Ohio, and CDC current guidelines for COVID-19 safety.
- Counselors must maintain good communication with the Camp Director to report bathroom usage (for cleaning purposes,) possible sick campers, etc.
- Counselors may be asked to wear a mask inside the buildings and while on the Audubon grounds when proper distancing is not feasible if COVID numbers are high in our area.
- The camp will be primarily outdoors, except for thunderstorms or other potentially dangerous hazards.
- All camp staff may be required to complete and pass a COVID-19 health questionnaire and other related COVID-19 requirements, such as a temperature check, each day before the start of camp, and may be asked to receive a COVID-19 test a few times throughout the summer.
- Counselors showing/feeling any signs of COVID-19 will be asked to be tested for COVID-19 and remain home until results are received. If there are any campers and/or counselors who become ill with COVID-19 symptoms during camp, they will be required to be tested, and their small group cohort will need to quarantine for the recommended amount of time.
- Summer camp staff will work as needed based on any restrictions required due to COVID-19 requirements. COVID-19 protocols are subject to change at any time, depending on high positive case levels in our area.
- Helping with other aspects of a summer camp such as contacting camp parents by phone or email, photocopying, or more.
- Use of basic office equipment may be used, such as a photocopier, fax machine, telephones, digital camera, and simple outdoor recreational equipment, such as pond nets, compasses, etc.
Qualifications and Experience
- Completion of at least two years of college coursework in environmental or life sciences is preferred.
- Some teaching experience and/or curriculum development or similar is preferred.
- Summer camp leadership experience is also preferred.
- Must be confident in leading a group and initiating activities, aware of COVID-19 guidelines and Aullwood Audubon’s safety procedures and have the ability to enforce those safety precautions .
- Ability to work both independently and in a team setting.
- Must be competent with Microsoft Office products; willing and comfortable using email and other electronic communication methods.
- Willing to participate in self-training programs to learn computer application programs such as CampDoc.
- Comfortable and confident in overseeing seasonal camp staff and volunteers and resolving minor issues that may arise among seasonal staff or campers/parents.
- Strong work ethic, natural history background, self-motivation, ongoing enthusiasm, attention to detail, commitment, and flexibility.
- Ability to work with sound judgment under pressure in changing situations, a desire to learn, excellent time management, and the ability to work well with others and with children.
- Must show respect for others of all ages, races, gender, etc., as well as respect for nature and the outdoors
- Enthusiastic about working, even in unfavorable weather conditions, pleasant, reliable, and able to carry out simple assigned tasks with minimal supervision.
- Must have a ride to and from Aullwood’s Nature Center and Farm locations each day for work.
- Must have the ability to walk all major trails of Aullwood Audubon and on uneven terrain.
- Be able to run, sit, stand, grasp, lift, carry, walk, push, reach, climb, and pull for short and extended periods of time.
- Able to work outdoors in the heat of summer, especially while wearing a mask.
- Must be willing to have temperature checks performed each day and receive COVID-19 testing, possibly several times throughout the summer, if requested.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
