ABOUT THE POSITION
Structural Engineering Practice Lead | Wethersfield, CT
VHB is seeking a Structural Engineering Practice Lead to expand our structural practice across CT. In this position, you would serve in a lead role in the planning, analysis, design, and detailing of bridge and other transportation related structural projects, as well as lead and mentor our structural team. The ideal candidate should possess a “can-do” attitude, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and an ability to work independently as well as with a team in a dynamic, fast-paced, and fun environment. The position includes significant opportunities for personal and professional development and growth within VHB’s transportation design practice.
Responsibilities
- Oversees the structural engineering team
- Project management/task management
- Responsible for client relationships, visibility, and business development opportunies within CT transportation sector
- Directs and mentors team members in the development of design plans, technical oversight, specifications, design calculations, load ratings, cost estimates, reports, final bid packages, etc.
- Performs quality reviews of team members work for accuracy and to ensure that the production of plans, specifications, reports, and analyses meet scope, schedule, cost, and quality requirements
- Manages, develops, organizes, and implements structural planning, analysis, preliminary and final design document preparation for bridge-focused transportation projects

- Knowledge of structural engineering software (AASHTOWare, LARSA 4D, MDX, SP Column, MerlinDASH, Mathcad)
- AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bentley OpenBridge, MicroStation v8 and Connect experience is a strong plus
Qualifications
- 15+ years of professional experience in structural bridge design, construction phasing, and complex bridge projects required
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience working on CTDOT structures projects
- CT PE license required
- Experience overseeing a team of 3 or more required
- BS in Civil Engineering required (structural emphasis preferred), Masters degree a plus
- Experience completing transportation studies, design reports, final design documents and developing contract plans, in conformity with accepted engineering standards and procedures including AASHTO & DOT
- Independent experience developing bridge design and detailing (steel, concrete, prestressed concrete), and seismic analysis
