Ambri, an energy startup commercializing an innovative Liquid Metal Battery technology first developed at MIT, is seeking a Structural Analysis Engineer to lead the evaluation of the structural analysis of Ambri’s DC system product**.** This position will also be responsible for managing a material library and being liaison between Systems and internal and external property testing facilities. The position requires working collaboratively with other engineering disciplines to design novel solutions to complex utility scale energy storage challenges using Ambri’s Liquid Metal Battery technology. The individual in this role will be called upon to be an innovative problem solver, provide technical leadership, work cross functionally, and communicate effectively with others within and outside the organization.
Responsibilities**:**
- Perform structural analysis of Ambri’s components, assemblies, prototypes, and systems using Ansys and/or Comsol software(s). This includes responsibility for model import, model preparation, material properties library management, meshing, applying boundary and load conditions as well as establishing and following a standard for documenting report outs.
- Responsible for managing material properties library including seeking out values relevant properties through scholarly paper investigation, external or internal testing. Ambri uses a wide array of materials with multiple use cases across multiple operating temperatures; identifying the relevant gaps in our library and filling them with empirical data is a critical job function.
- Independent creation and modification of simple 3D CAD components and assemblies required to rapidly hone and iterate on structural design concepts. Work closely and provide feedback with design engineers on creation and modification of more involved, complex components and assemblies
- Manage and assist outside resources as required, examples include managing specialized outside consultants to obtain seismic analysis certificates for product approval for use in various earthquake zones
- Communicate the capability of a system-level design concept to internal and external stake holders to ensure requirements are met, including assessment of alternative and competitive design concepts, and lead the development of system-level requirements
- Obtain input and lead negotiation with cross-functional and cross-discipline technical experts and designers to communicate complex subsystem and system-level designs through the entire design process into production
- Coordinate the development of design verification and system validation plans to manage risk and evaluate analytical and experimental test results to verify that new product designs meet internal technical requirements and validate that design solutions meet customer requirements
- Support in the creation and development of new product designs from prototype to production considering application, cost, weight, performance, thermodynamics, reliability, durability, manufacturing, assembly, and field serviceability
- Use experience with component selection in working directly with suppliers to ensure their parts meet system requirements
Requirements**:**
- BSME degree or equivalent required
- 5+ years of structural analysis using Ansys or similar software required
- 5+ years of mechanical design experience preferred
- 3+ years of 3D CAD software for mechanical design and/or CAE model preparation required. Solidworks and/or Spaceclaim experience preferred
- Experience in analyzing and/or designing with refractory ceramics highly preferred
- Experience in furnace design, incinerator design or other high-temperature fields designing heating and cooling systems preferred
- Experience with mechanically integrating systems together for high power application (1 to 5MW range) preferred
- Demonstrated excellent problem-solving skills
- Must have excellent English written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrated ability of working well within a team and independently to achieve results
- Professional Engineers or EIT License/certification a plus
