Staff Archaeologist

About the opportunity

SWCA is looking for a Staff Archaeologist who will act as a Crew Chief, based out of our Denver, Colorado, office to assist with a variety of projects in Colorado, Wyoming, and surrounding states. Project work will likely include pedestrian surveys, shovel testing, and may include data recovery or other field tasks. You will lead a crew in identifying cultural materials, collecting data with tablets, recording sites using state-specific protocols, and making National Register of Historic Places evaluations. You will coordinate with the field director or project manager daily to plan and coordinate fieldwork.

This is an on-call, hourly, regular-status (benefitted) position. You will typically work a full-time schedule, depending on workload. A typical schedule for summer work is 8-9 days on, 5-6 days off. We are currently looking for assistance for spring, summer, and fall fieldwork with the potential for winter office work. Pay ranges from $24.00–$32.00/hour commensurate with experience and role, with overtime paid at time-and-a-half, $59 per diem, paid sick-time accrual, and single-occupancy lodging for non-local projects.

What you will accomplish

  • Direct a cultural resource field crew to complete fieldwork safely and efficiently
  • Perform fieldwork (survey, testing, or data recovery) and assist project managers with field tasks
  • Coordinate field crew progress, and daily data transfer
  • Help prepare and review site forms
  • Effectively communicate and support teamwork across multiple disciplines, both internally and externally
  • Collect, organize, and perform QA/QC for own field data
  • Implement, enforce, and document SWCA’s safety standards for yourself and your crew
  • Conduct morning tailgate safety and coordination meetings
  • Manage and maintain field equipment
  • Possibly assist with technical reporting, including Phase I, II and III archaeological reports and all associated documentation and data forms, depending on workload
  • Demonstrate and maintain SWCA’s high standard of scientific ethics and quality assurance, and have the awareness to identify and resolve challenges in creative ways
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism at all times

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology or a closely related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience with a range of field methodologies; including survey, testing, and excavation is preferred
  • Minimum of 1 year of leading an archaeological field crew is preferred
  • Ability within a year to be listed with relevant archaeological permits within the west preferred
  • Secretary of the Interior qualified is preferred
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and demonstrate ability to coordinate effectively with SWCA senior staff and other project personnel
  • Leadership and supervision abilities, including problem solving, constructive conflict resolution, and decision making
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational and analytical skills
  • Team player with strong ability take initiative and solve problems using sound judgment
  • Current valid driver’s license and the ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads are required
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required

An employee in this Denver office -based position can expect a salary of $24.00/hr. - $32.00/hr.
