Responsibilities

Environmental Defense Fund Europe is an affiliate of Environmental Defense Fund, a leading international non-profit organisation that creates transformative solutions to the most serious environmental problems. With programs from Boston to Beijing, Environmental Defense Fund has tripled in size over the past decade by focusing on strong science, economics, market-based approaches, and innovative partnerships.

The position can be based in Belgium, Germany or the Netherlands but will require some travel to Brussels when in-person meetings and events resume.

Energy Transition Overview

The goal of the Energy Transition Team is to bend the curve on greenhouse gas emissions from oil and gas production and use by 2030, while meeting the world's energy needs cleanly and equitably. We are achieving this through a defined set of objectives targeted at 1) reducing emissions from oil and gas production, delivery and use, and 2) reducing demand for oil and gas in power generation, transportation, buildings and industry. To achieve our goal, we seek reforms in law, regulation, and/or business practice through a set of strategic corporate partnerships, direct engagement with policymakers and mobilizing investor and public sentiment in favour of change. In achieving our objectives, we facilitate cutting-edge science, technical innovation, and rigorous economic and financial analysis to develop durable solutions.

Overall Function

The Senior Communications Manager for Energy Transition is responsible for developing and executing public relations strategies to raise awareness of Environmental Defense Fund's methane work in key Member States. We are seeking an experienced media strategist who can craft compelling narratives, effective messaging and aggressively communicate our solutions and brand to target audiences through earned, owned- and paid content. They will manage and align European marketing communications plans with the broader Global Energy Transition Communications strategy to advance the goals of Environmental Defense Fund's global methane campaign.

They will bring a broad view of the energy landscape in Europe--its actors, government officials, corporations and others--and are capable of constructing and pitching the narratives that effectively frame our issue and position Environmental Defense Fund in the region. This person builds strategic relationships with influential media, opinion makers and other key stakeholders in order to advance Environmental Defense Fund's methane thought leadership.

The Senior Manager reports to the Associate Vice President of Communications, Energy Transition and works closely with the Environmental Defense Fund Europe's Head of Communications to devise plans that push our methane advocacy and help raise our regional profile.

Key Responsibilities

• Act as the lead on global methane communications in Europe; track the market, policy and technology opportunities for reducing methane, as well as obstacles to taxing gas imports, and develop/seed new narratives in the media based on that information.
• Develop and lead execution of a media strategy that builds narratives about methane in the energy transition; determine the news value of stories and new angles; craft media products (including statements, releases, commentary); build and foster relationships with key reporters and editors across national and trade outlets; cultivate spokespeople that reach target audiences; identify and lead rapid response to breaking events.
• Manage internal cross-team and external collaboration to deliver complete products on time, work across multiple priorities and disciplines (including earned media, partnership management, digital marketing and polling/message development) to ensure appropriate coordination; develop project-specific campaigns in line with broader workstream goals; track and evaluate success of the workstream; assist in identifying and raising funds to support the work as appropriate.
• Manage outside PR firm and their deliverables, adhering to timelines, budgets and approvals to ensure delivery of on-brand, on-message publicity and quality results.
• Participates in Environmental Defense Fund Diversity Equity and Inclusion goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental challenges we face. This includes fostering equitable systems and empowering diverse constituencies both internally and externally.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree plus applicable level of relevant work experience in strategic energy communications and/or a related media relations field, with extensive knowledge of pitching reporters, developing feature story ideas and successfully executing issue-based media campaigns.
• Demonstrated project leader who can work across multiple disciplines to deliver complete work on time.
• A master networker with strong relationship management skills, a high degree of emotional intelligence as well as a proven track-record of successful collaboration within your organisation and with a diverse range of stakeholders and decision makers.
• Excellent verbal and written communication, able to convey ideas and thinking clearly and concisely.
• Flexible and able to move quickly on fast-breaking assignments.
• Ability to translate complex energy concepts for the media and lay audiences.
• Strong research skills, ability to write persuasively and find and cite primary sources.
• Strong organisational, project, and people management skills.
• Preferred knowledge of EU policy landscape, particularly on energy issues.
• Preferred knowledge of earned media software, including Cision.
• Fluent in one or more languages in addition to English.
• Proficiency with social media tools and platforms required.
• Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds
