Senior Technical Advisor - Aquatic Biology

About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Senior Technical Advisor - Aquatic Biology based in our New Mexico-Four Corners subregion, reporting to Cody Stropki, Business Development Director (Climate Services). The successful candidate will support our practice and projects across the country with an initial focus on western river systems. We work to support our client’s needs across multiple service areas including government, ecological restoration, renewable energy generation, transportation, and transmission.  This is an hourly, temporary (without benefits) position but could grow into a regular, full-time position in the future.

What you will accomplish

As a Senior Technical Advisor - Aquatic Biology, you will:

  • Be recognized as a subject matter expert (SME) and technical and resource to provide advice and expertise to SWCA staff, projects and clients
  • Provide expertise to SWCA project managers on complex aquatic biology projects, which may including species-specific surveys, habitat evaluations, biological assessments/evaluations, population monitoring, and preparing various types of natural resources regulatory documents (e.g., NEPA).
  • Work closely with various team members throughout the planning and execution of projects
  • Prepare, review and provide QA/QC for technical documents as part of aquatic biology and related projects
  • Provide training and oversight to development depth and competency among staff biologists
  • Collaborate with clients, SWCA staff, and resource and regulatory agency staff to ensure project success

Experience and qualifications for success

  • Masters degree in water resources, biology, wildlife biology, fisheries or a related field, Ph.D preferred
  • At least 15 years of professional experience as an aquatic biologist
  • Strong knowledge of species-specific surveys, habitat evaluations, biological assessments/evaluations, and population monitoring
  • Strong technical writing and QA/QC skills.
  • Working knowledge of other relevant Federal regulations impacting aquatic resources.

An employee in this Albuquerque, NM - based position can expect a salary of around $55/hour. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.  Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
