ABOUT THE ROLE
Join us as the Revenue Recognition, Technical Accounting, and Reporting Manager! In this pivotal role, you'll have the chance to apply your technical accounting expertise while contributing to the mission of a dedicated B Corp. Your responsibilities will encompass executing and upholding financial procedures, ensuring financial compliance, and harmonizing these activities with our strong commitment to sustainability. Additionally, you'll play a key role in preparing the company's reports and statements. This is a full time role reporting to the Corporate Controller. We have a preference for this new team member to join us in a flexible hybrid work environment in one of our offices in San Francisco CA, Portland, OR, Portland, ME or New York, NY. Highly qualified candidates located in other parts of the United States may also be considered.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
- Oversee and provide revenue recognition analysis and reporting for month end close process
- Provide strategic direction in support of critical revenue cycle initiatives and goals
- Ensure compliance with and maintain documentation related to ASC 606 and other relevant revenue recognition standards
- Collaborate with sales, finance, legal, and other key teams to ensure that contracts and renewals are compliant with accounting guidelines
- Develop models to be utilized for proper revenue recognition
- Participate in process and system reviews and improvements
- Support interim and year-end financial statement audits
- Research and resolve revenue-related issues
- Review key analyses and account reconciliations for revenue, deferred revenue, and accounts receivable related accounts (both domestic and international)
- Provide detailed insight into revenue fluctuations on a monthly basis, investigating transactional drivers and working with billing operations on root cause; work closely with FP&A to assist with explaining results, modeling, and forecasting revenues
- Perform review of non-standard, complex contracts and determine accounting treatment
- Conduct research on accounting literature pertaining to new business initiatives, complex contacts and/or transactions
- Prepare technical accounting memorandums to document our review and conclusion of a technical accounting matter
- Support all aspects of our accounting and reporting process, including conducting reviews with senior leadership
- Prepare annual financial statements and support the annual audit process
ABOUT YOU
You have demonstrated success with several years of progressive accounting and revenue recognition experience, giving you the foundation to thrive in a dynamic industry. You are comfortable managing all aspects of the revenue recognition process, have a strong understanding of ASC 606, and are able to accurately maintain a general ledger and ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). In addition, you are highly focused on accuracy, have excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills, and are ready to bring your expertise to a Benefit Corporation focused on helping businesses take urgent action on climate change. The following experiences and skills would demonstrate your ability to be successful in this role:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required
- CPA or equivalent license strongly preferred
- 5+ years of accounting experience
- 3+ years of financial auditing experience
- Ability to facilitate workshops and meetings effectively
- Strong financial analysis skills
- Experience using NetSuite or other equivalents ERPs / accounting software; along with Salesforce or other CRMs
- Experience working with proprietary databases (i.e. SQL, Access, Oracle) preferred
- Prior experience with commodities, wholesale trading, highly preferred
- Proficiency with tax laws, U.S. GAAP (including deferred and unbilled revenue recognition), and ASC 606 required
- Experience working with multiple currencies and/or multinational entities preferred
- Excellent spreadsheet skills
- Highly organized and detail-oriented
- Interest in renewable energy helpful
- Knowledge of performance metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs)
- Strong communication and presentation skills
- Ability to build relationships with stakeholders at various levels within the organization
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment
HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS
Within 30 days
- Become familiar with the nature of operations, environmental commodity products, and revenue cycle
- Establish strong working relationships with team members, stakeholders, and cross-functional partners
- Develop a deep understanding of the company structure, products, and risk policies and has a deep appreciation for the unique risk profile of the company
- Familiarize yourself with the structure of the department and understanding how your role holistically applies to the success of the department
Within 90 days
- Identify and implement process improvements, aligning revenue recognition practices with ASC 606 requirements
- Understand all aspects of the company’s financial processes, policies and systems
- Identify at least three process improvement opportunities within the revenue recognition workflow
Within 6 months
- Provide meaningful improvements to the revenue recognition process and collaborate with the Controller to provide efficiencies around the month-end close process
- Prepare the organization for ASC 606 audits by implementing rigorous documentation and testing procedures
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, such as finance, legal, and sales, to ensure consistent interpretation and application of ASC 606
Within 12 months
- Take full ownership of the revenue recognition process and become the key point of contact for revenue-related inquiries, analysis, and resolutions
- Establish a position with the leadership of the department providing valuable and actionable insights from a financial perspective that drive company performance
- Establish robust reporting mechanisms to monitor revenue recognition compliance and performance
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Compensation: The starting base pay for this position is $125,000 to $170,000 in the US. The total compensation package for the successful candidate in this role may exceed the base pay as it includes other incentive pay. The base pay is dependent upon many factors such as location, transferable or job-related skills, work experience, relevant training, business needs, and market demands. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future

- Supplemental Pay: this position is eligible for discretionary bonus programs including the company’s profit-sharing program and an annual performance bonus based on personal, department and company goals
