Political economy and governance sit at the heart of E3G’s approach to climate change. Our research and analysis inform critical strategies to achieve international climate ambition at COP30 and enable fair, rapid, and clean energy transitions throughout G20 countries. This role will support E3G’s new Centre for the Political Economy of Climate Change and its objective of connecting analysis to climate action, sharing knowledge, and bringing together stakeholders. We are seeking a smart, proactive individual to be part of this ambitious research and analysis agenda in this critical decade.

We work on the frontier of the climate politics landscape, tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate. Our goal is to translate climate politics, economics, and policies into action.

Role Overview

With experience in 30 countries and multiple sectors, E3G is working with partners to scale and professionalize capability for core political economy analysis with a research and analysis program spanning up to 20 countries in the next 3 years, along with convening, training and capacity building, strategic advisory support, and thought leadership. Powered by E3G’s climate-focused political economy mapping methodology (PEMM), the aim is to bring a step change in the political economy capabilities of the climate community to drive ambitious climate strategies and action across a range of issues, geographies, and sectors.

This is an exciting opportunity to play an active role in research and analysis, working with the E3G PEMM tool, contributing to a range of political economy analytical products in a wide range of sectors and economies, and sharing your analysis and insight with many national and international partners. Person Description

You will bring a strong track record of research and analysis in projects relevant to political economy, climate politics, and sectoral and societal transitions. You will be adept at working across a diverse range of sectoral, economic, and governance areas and in multiple countries, reaching analytical judgments to conform with defined strategic objectives. You will be skilled at adapting research approaches to project context and working with a range of partners and stakeholders in the research process and in the practical application and dissemination of research. You will be ready to contribute practical expertise on research and product development as well as increasingly in subject areas relevant to political economy and climate change in key sectors and countries.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out primary and secondary research projects to assess country and sectoral political economy connected with climate action and transitions.
• Develop analysis and insight based on research and prepare a range of analytical products, including reports, presentations, and briefings.
• Monitor developments, make rapid political economy assessments, and identify new thematic areas for further research.
• Provide training, advice, and support to E3G teams and the wider community on political economy mapping tools and methods, including contributing to training and capacity building.
• Develop a network of research practitioners at other organizations in civil society and academia.
• Support preparations and running of workshops and meetings internally and with external partners and stakeholders, contributing expert analysis and insight to inform partners and stakeholders.
• Develop and maintain a good working knowledge of practical research methods, political economy, and governance issues related to climate action and transitions, and over time develop and maintain a robust, in-depth knowledge in a select number of relevant venues, sectors, or issues.
• International travel may be required from time to time.

Experience and Skills

We’re looking for a successful candidate who can demonstrate a range of qualifications, competencies, and experience to fit the role, including:

• An undergraduate degree, and ideally a postgraduate qualification in a relevant discipline.
• Several years of relevant professional experience with a strong research and analytical focus.
• Working knowledge in one or more of these areas: climate change politics and policy, democracy, rule of law, governance, environment, political economy.
• Strong research, analytical, and thinking skills with intellectual curiosity and creativity, and proficiency working with complex information and databases.
• Demonstrated ability to reach judgments and develop sound analysis and insight based on research and evidence.
• Adept at presenting clear, accessible analysis in written form and presenting ideas clearly and credibly with colleagues.
• Supportive, collaborative, and open colleague and team player.
• Well-organized, proactive, and practical with a strong commitment to delivering desired outputs, results, and outcomes.
• Proficient at working across a wide range of subject areas and countries, information sources, and with diverse stakeholders with an openness to learning.

• E3G offers a reward and benefits package which compares well with other organizations within our sector. The salary range for this position is £40,500 - £43,000 and is dependent on experience, with a yearly process for remuneration review.
