The Office of Chief Scientist (OCS) is the nexus of science at EDF, ensuring that the science that is the backbone for all EDF policy positions is based on the best available information. To be most effective in this role, OCS provides programmatic support for all scientists at EDF and fosters relationships with scientists outside the organization.
The Office of Chief Scientist is seeking a motivated and knowledgeable Senior Research Analyst to join a cross-cutting team of scientists and policy experts focused on maximizing the climate benefits of emerging hydrogen energy systems. In this role, the successful candidate will be conducting research and analysis for hydrogen-related scientific, technical, environmental and social issues. In addition, the Senior Research Analyst will take a leadership role on a variety of smaller projects, synthesize complex information and translate it for technical and non-technical audiences. The Senior Research Analyst will report to a Senior Scientist II in the Office of Chief Scientist.
Independently find, collect and synthesize scientific information, including academic literature and analysis, as well as policy proposals on program design, with a focus on hydrogen as a decarbonization strategy for industrial, transport, power, and building applications.
Participate effectively in a cross-cutting team of scientists, policy experts, business and finance experts, communication specialists, and other analysts in the climate and energy space in support of goals and objectives.
Stay up-to-date and keep track of the latest hydrogen peer-reviewed literature, reports, news, developments and events, and communicate the details orally and/or in writing to the team.
Attend events (such as conferences, workshops, webinars) virtually and/or in-person.
Support and occasionally lead in-house climate- and energy-related quantitative analyses for internal and external requests.
Take a leading role in authoring and co-authoring materials for policy makers, media outlets, and other stakeholders (including scientific journal articles, technical reports, memos, factsheets, policy memos, and blogs) that articulate complex technical concepts and information in a timely, comprehensible, and politically salient matter, in close coordination with relevant EDF staff.
Respond to “rapid-response” queries relating to program policy issues from press/media, government, external partners, and internal sources.
Present analyses and findings through clear and compelling oral presentations to both internal and external audiences.
Assist the team with note-taking for internal and external meetings, writing talking points for team member speaking engagements, and contributing to the preparation of slide decks.
Manage projects, analytics, and workflows in support of different policies and related goals, including developing, executing, and managing workplans involving both internal and external partners.
In conjunction with Development and OCS staff, help develop funding proposals, grants, and interim reports to foundations and major donors.
Participate in EDF’s communications, advocacy, and outreach to policy makers, companies, the public, and other stakeholders.
Maintain and build ties to research communities, through outreach, presentations at workshops and conferences, informal contacts, etc.
Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.
Occasionally serve as an EDF science representative in external settings (e.g., meetings with policy makers, Congressional staff, other environmental organizations, research institutions, or corporations) to collaborate with key partners and ensure EDF’s policies, legal positions, and communications are based on the best available science.
Use independent judgment to plan, prioritize, and organize a diverse workload.
Bachelor’s degree in environmental science or energy-related field with 4 or more years of experience or a Master’s degree in environmental science or energy-related field with at least 2 years of relevant experience.
Coursework or experience with hydrogen applications (such as fuel cells), life cycle analysis, material science, energy efficiency, atmospheric chemistry, gas leakage, and/or fluid dynamics preferred.
Strong quantitative skills and experience in performing rigorous analyses.
Knowledge of the principles, concepts, and methods of a relevant technical or scientific field.
Strong computer proficiency, including experience with Microsoft Office, and internet research; experience with R, Python, or MatLab preferred.
Excellent research, writing and presentation skills, ability to translate technical information for non-technical audiences.
Intellectual agility and comfort with working across disciplines and multiple teams, and learning new skills.
Demonstrated ability to complete complex projects and research assignments.
Ability to work independently, manage time efficiently, and collaborate effectively with diverse colleagues in a fast-paced environment.
Excellent problem solving. Experience in project management and exceptional personal organization, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.
