NRDC is a non-profit environmental advocacy organization. We use law, science, and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure the rights of all people to clean air, clean water, and healthy communities. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our people helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act and many of the implementing regulations. Today, our team of more than 700 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy advocates, communications experts, and others work across the United States and the globe from our offices in Bozeman, Montana; Chicago; New York; San Francisco; Santa Monica; Washington, D.C.; and Beijing. 
 
NRDC is seeking a part time (80%) Senior Project Advocate to work with the Oceans International team in our Washington or New York  office.

Position Summary

NRDC is seeking a part time (80%) Senior Project Advocate to work with the Oceans Division of the Nature Program. This position will play a leadership role for the Oceans Division in advocating for the adoption and effective implementation of international agreements. Office location preferences are NRDC’s Washington, D.C., and New York offices; hybrid arrangements may be possible.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements high impact strategies and campaigns both in-country and at the United Nations to advance Ocean Division international priorities;
  • Maintains and expands NRDC’s relationships with Heads of State, Ministers and their key staff in countries that will play an important role in adoption and implementation of international ocean conservation agreements;
  • Develops creative initiatives that bring together Ministers, Heads of State, celebrities and influencers to elevate the political level of discussion around international ocean-related treaties and agreements;
  • Provides substantive expertise on range of oceans issues;
  • Develops communication strategies that raise the profile of our ocean priorities, including development of social media content, engaging with traditional media and other communications activities;
  • Plays leadership role in setting international policy and advocacy priorities for the Oceans Division;
  • Works with the International Division, Communications, Campaigns and other internal NRDC programs to bring their expertise to bear in advancing Oceans Division priorities;
  • Manages and mentors Oceans Division staff;
  • Plays leadership role in development and fundraising activities for the Division; and
  • Helps set and manage budgets for the Division

Qualifications

Required

  • Commitment to NRDC’s mission and values.
  • 15+ years; less experienced applicants with exceptional track records will also be considered
  • Existing relationships with Heads of State, Ministers and their staffs in key countries in Latin America, Africa and Europe essential.
  • Deep, substantive knowledge of policy issues and grasp of international political dynamics around ocean conservation essential.
  • Extensive experience with ocean-related United Nations treaties, conventions, and related bodies;
  • Strong strategic skills relevant to policy, advocacy, and project development
  • Substantial knowledge of and experience with international ocean conservation treaties and agreements
  • Substantial knowledge of and experience in achieving campaign goals and objectives
  • Track record of success in promoting advocacy goals
  • Persuasive verbal and written communications skills
  • Strong inter-personal, relationship-building and networking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work hard and independently

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. For this position, the salary is $116,000 to $120,000. Internal equity considerations will be reviewed before making a final offer.

Since March 2020, NRDC’s offices have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. You will be associated with one of our offices, but until circumstances allow us to re-open, we will continue to support NRDCers with remote working arrangements.
