Context and role

E3G’s new centre for political economy of climate change is powered by a climate-focused political economy mapping methodology (PEMM) to bring a step change in the political economy capabilities of the climate community. At our new Climate Transformation Hub, we will bring together analysis in a knowledge platform and connect stakeholders to drive ambitious climate strategies and action.

With experience in 30 countries and multiple sectors, E3G is now working with partners to scale and professionalise capability for core political economy analysis with a research and analysis programme spanning up to 20 countries in the next 3 years, along with convening, training and capacity building, strategic advisory support and thought leadership.

This is an exciting opportunity to play an active role in research and make a key contribution to create a programme of research and analysis using the PEMM tool to produce a range of political economy analytical products. Person Description

You have demonstrated a varied portfolio of skills including thought leadership, stakeholder relationship management, management of complex projects, and team management. You also bring a strong track record of conducting and managing research and analysis projects in areas relevant to political economy, climate politics and sectoral and societal transitions. You will bring a strategic and creative approach to designing programme and project priorities and adapting methodologies to meet outcomes. You will be ready to contribute expertise in the design of products and processes to provide insight to inform strategy and influence as well as in relevant subject matter in key sectors and countries. You are comfortable with complex research projects and confident in running analytical processes. You will be able to identify and engage with a range of external stakeholders to understand and engage with their perspectives and communicate your ideas and findings to a varied audience.

Key Responsibilities

The key job responsibilities for this role are:

  • Develop political strategy and E3G thought leadership to support design, delivery and scale-up of E3G’s Climate Transformation Hub
  • Develop, maintain and manage a network of key stakeholders, research partners, and research teams to achieve policy and project objectives
  • Design, develop and oversee a programme of research and analysis using the PEMM tool to produce a range of political economy analytical products, including digital
  • Execute and lead delivery of political economy mapping research projects in priority countries (e.g. G20 and guest countries, JETP countries) and special reports, from scoping through to methodology and report/product writing, including managing and developing stakeholder relationships.
  • Produce and oversee production of wide range of high quality, high impact analytical and insight products including reports, presentations and briefings
  • Oversee online knowledge base development and curation, working with teams and digital and creative partner
  • Organise and participate in stakeholder discussions, events and workshops, ensuring analysis and insight inform strategy
  • Deliver a wide range of research techniques including fieldwork such as telephone and in-person interviews, literature reviews, focus groups and data analysis
  • Track political economy and governance developments relevant to climate change the transitions, and interpreting them in the context of E3G’s strategy and work
  • Produce internal and external communications materials and contribute regular short pieces of wider analysis
  • Provide advice and support to E3G teams and to wider community on political economy mapping tools and methods, including contributing to training and capacity building
  • Manage, deliver, track, and report on a portfolio of grant-funded work and deliverables. This will include planning, allocating and overseeing resources and work, working with team to set objectives and priorities, and ensuring risk management and course correction in response to emerging challenges and opportunities.
  • Support grant management and fundraising efforts for E3G’s Climate Transformation Hub
  • International travel may be required from time to time

Experience and Skills

The successful candidate will:

  • Have at least 5-7 years of relevant professional experience with progressive levels of responsibilities and a track record of significant achievements and contributions to outcomes
  • Have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (required) and post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline (desirable)
  • Have experience in developing and implementing outcome focused strategies using problem solving and research, constantly developing and refining your arguments and analysis through conversations with experts, assessing legislation or policy statements, and political context
  • Demonstrated analytical, research and strategic thinking skills
  • Have experience and a keen interest in working with real and political economy datasets and intelligence as well as domestic and foreign policy
  • Have a track record of problem solving and research. You are able to quickly familiarise yourself with a new topic through self-led research including conversations with experts, assessing legislation or policy statements, and other data sources; including basic quantitative analysis
  • Excellent project management skills and demonstrated capacity to deliver research and analysis
  • Be a strong team player, committed to achieving E3G’s objectives and capable of inspiring and facilitating action by others. You pay attention to detail and work effectively to support shared team outcomes
  • Have very strong written communication skills and impeccable English
  • Have strong strategic and political understanding and influencing skills. You prioritise achieving outcomes over running activities.

Further Details

This role is based in E3G’s London office. E3G offers flexible working arrangements and operates a hybrid based working approach. We are open to exploring optimal working arrangements with the successful candidate. International travel is required as part of this role.

E3G will require candidates to demonstrate that they have the right to live and work in the jurisdiction in which E3G employs them. E3G is unable to provide relocation assistance or visa support.

A remuneration package competitive with the non-profit sector will be offered. Salary is up to £52,000 per annum depending on experience. Benefits include 25 days of paid leave plus additional leave between Christmas and new year; travel and hospitalisation insurance; generous pension contribution.
