A recognised global leader on the geopolitics of climate change, E3G is looking for a Berlin-based Senior Policy Advisor to lead the team’s work on German climate foreign policy, as part of E3G’s global climate diplomacy and geopolitics team.

Context and role overview

Building a climate safe world requires global cooperation. E3G’s Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics programme aims to provide the conditions and coalitions between governments and non-state actors to empower decision-makers to drive the global transformation to climate safety. In Germany, the team is aiming to shape and support alignment of foreign policy with climate action and to leverage Germany as a climate leader internationally. This will require to develop multi-stakeholder strategies and thought leadership at the intersection of climate, foreign, economic, and security policy.

The main focus of the Senior Policy Advisor to develop and implement E3G’s Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics strategy for Germany, sustain and develop an active network of practitioners and policy makers and inform E3G’s wider strategies and activities on German climate policy in a geopolitical context.

The Senior Policy Advisor will be reporting to the Programme Lead in the Germany and EU Climate Diplomacy team.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop and implement E3G’s strategy on German climate foreign policy and diplomacy in the context of geopolitics and international climate politics.
  • Provide thought leadership at the intersection of climate, foreign, economic, and security policy and deliver clear, accessible research and analysis outputs such as policy briefings, reports and presentations to key stakeholders respectively.
  • Prepare and provide respective strategic policy advice to key stakeholders in Berlin and beyond, organise high-level high-impact convenings in support of team outcomes, present and represent E3G’s position externally.
  • Sustain and develop an active substantial network of relevant stakeholders in government, think tanks, civil society, private sector to further expand E3G’s influential space.
  • Coordinate with the broader E3G Berlin team around key legislative and political events to bring out German international politics, international expectations, and impacts.
  • Coordinate running a dedicated tracker on German and international climate developments.
  • Provide further support as necessary.
  • International travel may be required from time to time.

Experience and Skills

We’re looking for a successful candidate who can demonstrate a range of qualifications, competencies and experience to fit the role, including:

  • A high-quality degree and ideally a post graduate qualification in a relevant area (e.g. climate change, international relations, economics, politics, development, international trade)
  • You are an insider on Berlin domestic and international politics with substantial experience on German, EU, international climate policy, foreign policy, geopolitics, energy or a related field.
  • Strong communicator, you have native/bilingual German and very good English writing and editing skills, and the ability to draw out a clear and compelling story on complex issues.
  • You are confident engaging stakeholders in government, industry, finance and civil society, at all levels of seniority. You are able to connect to audiences and understand interests of stakeholders outside the ‘climate bubble’.
  • Supportive, collaborative and open colleague and team player.
  • You must have the right to work in Germany.

Further details

This role is located in Berlin. E3G operates a flexible working environment, with staff expected to come to the office at least twice a week on average.
