Senior Policy Advisor, Climate Foreign Policy (US)

This position is based in E3G’s Washington, D.C. office and will integrate climate objectives into geopolitical strategy of US national security, foreign policy, and international development policy decision-makers.

Overview of Role

A climate safe world requires aligning different forces in society to create the policies and institutions necessary to drive change. E3G’s work sets out to understand and shape how countries’ economic conditions interact with their political systems to produce decisions on climate change. With growing understanding that climate is a geopolitical and geostrategic issue, the US must drive change towards a climate safety at home and abroad.

The Senior Policy Advisor role will lead on developing and delivering E3G’s strategy to shape US foreign policy in line with the transition to a climate safe world. The candidate will develop a strategy working with the diplomacy and geopolitics team, identifying priority interventions, building out our network within the US government, as well as keeping track of climate politics at the international level, with a particular focus on US’s relationships with the EU, China, and developing countries. The candidate will develop a strong analytical base for our work on climate diplomacy going forward. The role will require a deep understanding of the connections between climate and foreign policy, with a strong interest in the cross-cutting institutions and policies needed to further international climate action.

Profile and Requirements

You are intellectually curious and enthusiastic about working with others to develop solutions in the transition towards climate neutral and resilient economies. You are a creative thinker, able to learn fast and committed to high quality outputs.

You are comfortable working on research projects and confident in supporting analytical processes. You will be able to help identify and engage with external stakeholders to understand their perspectives and communicate ideas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor US national security and foreign policy developments and identify opportunities for integrating climate objectives into geopolitical strategy and thinking;
  • Develop and maintain relationships with US national security and foreign policy decisionmakers and thought leaders;
  • Build coalitions of like-minded partners in philanthropy, non-profits, and private sectors to advance climate objectives in US geopolitical thinking and policymaking through meetings and briefings with decisionmakers, as well as thought-leadership;
  • Work with other E3G colleagues to integrate thinking and developments, e.g. MDB reform, critical minerals, industrial decarbonization, etc., into US geopolitical thinking;
  • Participate in public panels, roundtables, private briefings, etc. to raise E3G's profile and advance climate in US geopolitical thinking;
  • Develop and publish thought leadership on climate in US national security and foreign policy;
  • Help establish and elevate E3G's brand in the US, especially Washington, DC policy circles; and
  • Work with E3G colleagues to complete identify fundraising opportunities, develop grant proposals, and complete grant deliverables .

Experience and Skills

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Superb written and oral communication skills, e.g. comfortable speaking publicly on panels, roundtables, to administration officials, and Congress, as well as writing reports, op-eds, etc.;
  • Strong analytical skills, including ability to connect dots across the geopolitical landscape;
  • Deep understanding of US national security, foreign policy, and geopolitics;
  • Working knowledge of the role climate could and should play in geopolitical and geostrategic thinking in the US;
  • Existing relationships with US national security and foreign policymakers, and think tank officials;
  • Experience building networks and coalitions to advance policy ideas and influence policymakers/change makers; and
  • Participation in multilateral processes (e.g., UNFCCC, G7/G20) and events (e.g., NATO Summits, UNGA, Munich Security Conference) a plus.

Further Details

This role is offered on a 1-year fixed-term basis with the possibility of further extension. This role is in Washington, D.C. E3G DC operates a flexible working environment and operates a hybrid based working approach.

E3G will require candidates to demonstrate that they have the right to live and work in the jurisdiction in which E3G employs them. E3G is unable to provide relocation assistance or visa support.

A remuneration package competitive with the non-profit sector will be offered. Salary is up to $85,000 depending on experience. Benefits include 25 days of vacation annually plus additional leave between Christmas and New Year, sick leave, health insurance (dental and vision included), and 401(b) retirement contributions.
