Senior Policy Advisor, Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics
E3G Berlin seeks a seasoned and dedicated strategic thinker to join its dynamic Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics team in Berlin. The Senior Policy Advisor will further develop E3Gs capacity to respond to the challenge of deepening global climate cooperation at a time of increasing international tension and fragmentation.

E3G is an independent climate change think tank with a global outlook. We work on the frontier of the climate landscape to make the necessary possible, tackling the barriers and advancing the solutions to a safe climate. Our goal is to translate climate politics, economics and policies into action. We are world leading strategists on the political economy of climate change, consistently ranked as one of the top-ten most influential environmental think tanks in the world by the University of Pennsylvania.
Context and overview of role
A climate safe world requires aligning different forces in society to create the policies and institutions necessary to drive change. E3G’s work sets out to understand and shape how countries’ economic conditions interact with their political systems to produce decisions on climate change. With a new government in place, Germany has the potential to become a major player to drive change towards a climate safety at home and abroad.
The new Senior Policy Advisor role will lead on developing and delivering E3G’s strategy to shape the transformation of German Foreign Policy in line with the transition to a climate safe world. The candidate will develop a strategy working with the diplomacy and geopolitics team, identifying priority interventions, and building out our network within the German government as well as keeping track of climate politics at the international level, with a particular focus on Germany’s relationships with the EU, US, China, and climate vulnerable countries. The candidate will develop a strong analytical base for our work on climate diplomacy going forward. The role will require a deep understanding of the connections between climate and foreign policy, with a strong interest in the cross-cutting institutions and policies needed to further international climate action.
Key responsibilities
Thought leadership: Develop E3G thought leadership on integrating climate into Germany’s foreign policy. Track developments in German foreign policy, external relationships with partners in the climate diplomacy space and implications for climate politics and wider E3G priorities.
Representation: Develop E3G’s position as a voice in conversations on foreign policy and climate, develop propositions and lead advocacy around German foreign policy, strengthen E3G’s networks on climate and foreign policy in the German government.
Convening stakeholders: Engage with and help to convene key stakeholder networks and supporting NGOs, businesses, cities and investor groups, as well as managing relationships with these stakeholders.
Advocating and communicating: Produce internal and external communications materials, undertake short pieces of wider analysis, and engage actively with media.
Building a stronger E3G: Inspire and facilitate action by the wider Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics team on foreign policy, playing an active role in developing the team, supporting others, with the prospect of building up a small team dedicated to trade issues.
Funder management: Manage grant funding and support fundraising efforts.

You are a creative thinker, able to learn fast and show positivity in finding solutions. You can reflect on your own strengths and weaknesses and work in a team of diverse personalities.
You are comfortable with complex research projects and confident in running analytical processes. You will be able to identify and engage with a range of external stakeholders to understand and engage with their perspectives and communicate your ideas and findings to a varied audience.
Experience and skills
The successful candidate will bring relevant professional experience with progressive levels of responsibilities and a track record of achievements in the following areas:
Have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (required) and post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline (desirable).
Demonstrate deep knowledge on foreign policy and an understanding of climate policy more broadly. You bring in-depth experience and established networks in at least one of those areas.
Have experience in developing and implementing outcome focused strategies.
Have a track record of problem solving and research, constantly developing and refining your arguments and analysis through conversations with experts, assessing legislation or policy statements, and other data sources.
Demonstrate a track-record of building, leading and managing stakeholder relationships and partnerships (required), these could be from the foreign policy or climate policy communities, you are able to connect to audiences and understand interests of stakeholders outside the ‘climate bubble’
Be a strong team player, committed to achieving E3G’s objectives and capable of inspiring and facilitating action by others. You work effectively to support shared team outcomes.
Communicate very effectively in written and spoken English and German (C1/C2 level). Other languages a plus.
Be confident operating in an international context with a high degree of cultural sensitivity.
Have experience influencing senior decision-makers from government, business, finance and civil society.
Have experience managing and supporting the development of staff.

This role is offered on a 1-year fixed-term basis with the possibility of further extension.
