OVERALL FUNCTION

The Senior Health Scientist advises program staff on a breadth of scientific issues relevant to EDF’s Global Clean Air strategic initiative and works to translate complex scientific findings into actionable ideas that can help advance our goals. The Global Clean Air Initiative seeks to design the next generation of impactful clean air solutions needed around the world, by scaling up new methods and analytics to make the invisible visible and paint a comprehensive picture of air pollution sources and health impacts. The Sr. Health Scientist introduces, integrates and advises on cutting edge environmental health concepts and insights as needed to support EDF's organizational priorities. The Sr. Health Scientist is responsible for supporting EDF’s reputation as a center for high caliber science work by building scientific collaborations, initiating new lines of research on issues relevant to our Global Clean Air work, and upholding and preserving the scientific integrity and quality of EDF’s advocacy.

JOB LOCATION

This role can be performed 100% remotely or on a hybrid arrangement out of any EDF office located in the US or out of our La Paz, Mexico office. Candidates from other select Latin American countries outside of Mexico may be considered with exception.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide scientific oversight and support to core strategies within EDF’s Global Clean Air initiative that aim to have more people breathing cleaner air through building awareness and understanding of air pollution and its health impacts, with a focus on reducing disparities.

• Advise staff and leadership on emerging issues in environmental health, specifically as it relates to the inequities in health impacts of air pollution, in order to keep EDF at the cutting edge of science in this area.
• Establish and maintain a global community of  scientific partnerships.
• Lead the development and execution of collaborative scientific initiatives that advance the field.
• Lead scientific analyses in support of policy priorities including the production of secondary literature reviews, technical public comments and white papers.
• Conduct scientific evaluation of risk assessments and evaluations to support EDF policy positions.
• Lead multi-disciplinary science projects.
• Manage fellows and/or research consultants as needed.
• Contribute to reports, blogs, written comments and other communications materials to provide effective translation of complex scientific concepts for a lay audience.
• Represent EDF in a variety of settings, including in domestic and international government forums, legislative and regulatory proceedings, meetings with corporate executives, and interactions with other NGOs.
• Participate in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values

QUALIFICATIONS

• A PhD in an environmental health-related field and at least 3 years of related experience or a Master’s degree with at least 6 years of related experience.
• Proven strategic thinker with demonstrated health science expertise in an air quality-related issue area, with extensive contacts within the health sciences community.
• Proven ability to lead and manage multi-faceted scientific projects.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and/or mentor others.
• Commitment to scientific integrity.
• Commitment to advancing environmental justice and equity. Relevant experience integrating justice and equity into research practices and partnerships preferred.
• Commitment to cultivating a diverse and inclusive workplace and building trust in relationships.
• Demonstrates self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Salary

USD $110,000.00/Yr.

Maximum Salary

USD $123,000.00/Yr.
