Overall Function
The Senior Financial Analyst, Europe will help develop, track and analyze budgets and fundraising proposals, will organize and present financial data for reporting and decision-making, and will execute financial processes for the Europe Region department, their relevant initiatives/workstreams and the workstreams that they partner across. This requires organizing data; completing financial reports; reviewing grants, contracts and subawards; performing financial analysis and projections; reconciling variances; and identifying and resolving any issues. This position will pursue continuous improvement in reporting and processes used to monitor budgets and present moderately complex financial data for decision-making to both financial and non-financial audiences.
The Senior Financial Analyst will report to the AVP, Mission Finance & Operations and will be a member of the Mission Finance team whilst working very closely with the Environmental Defense Fund Europe employees. As a part of the Enterprise Operations department, this position will partner with other Mission Finance staff and the Finance and Development teams. Working in this matrixed environment, the Senior Financial Analyst will ensure the production of timely, accurate, and insightful financial information for various stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
Execute financial planning and reporting activities as well as lead day-to-day financial processes, including expense reclasses, invoicing, contract financial review, correct coding of expenses and updating forecasts as needed, on behalf of the Europe Region Department and relevant Mission Workstreams.
Produce timely month-end reports of actual vs. budget results, ensuring accuracy and completeness and investigating, analyzing, and explaining variances from budget for income and expense line items.
Identify variances and issues in budget management and work with program staff to correct.
In collaboration with the Finance team, prepare timely financial reports for the European entities, EDFE UK and the Stichting.
Prepare and facilitate fundraising proposal budgets and donor financial reports on awarded revenue.
Prepare budgets and financial reports for various stakeholders, including Mission staff, internal management, finance staff, and senior operations leads.
As applicable, manage one or more grants, including government grants, and their funds.
Submit and approve invoices, including purchase orders for management approval.
Assist in the development of department and workstream annual budget submissions.
Participate in departmental meetings and trainings with both the Enterprise Operations and the Europe Region teams.
As applicable, manage financial analyses processes, which includes training, coaching and supporting junior team members.

Qualifications
4 years of relevant experience in finance or accounting required.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field required, or an advanced degree with at least 2 years of experience.
Fluency in English, plus Dutch or French required.
Proven knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and reporting required.
Finance, grants, government funding, and fund accounting experience in a non-profit organization is strongly preferred.
Experience with NetSuite or other forecasting/budgeting reporting SAAS is preferred.
Experience with reporting related to government grants, foundations, and private donors is preferred.
Ability to perform financial analysis and to create insight from a large-scale general ledger.
Detail-oriented with the ability to spot trends and ensure accuracy.
Demonstrated familiarity of GAAP and European accounting requirements, particularly in Belgium, and thorough understanding of non-profit accounting principles and grants management.
Experienced in MS Office Suite, with expertise in Excel, including the ability to develop formulas, pivot tables, charts and spreadsheets that clearly present data to facilitate decision-making by management.
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and diplomatic skills, including the ability to effectively liaise with colleagues, particularly communicating financial information to a broad audience with differing needs.
Self-motivated with solid organizational and problem-solving skills.
Ability to multi-task and be flexible under pressure with changing priorities and perform well in a fast-paced team environment.
Ability to work productively and independently as well as collaboratively with a team.
Demonstrated self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
