Senior Coordinator, Climate Science

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Climate Science, the Senior Coordinator, Climate Science will be responsible for supporting Audubon’s science team with regional, national, and hemispheric bird conservation initiatives.

The Senior Coordinator will conduct technical analyses and the application of knowledge and skills in data management, spatial data analysis, geoprocessing, landscape analysis, climate science, ornithology, environmental and/or climate justice, and map design; assembling relevant datasets; and generating spatial and quantitative data products.

The Senior Coordinator, Climate Science will also contribute to the process of publishing Audubon science work including, but not limited to, peer-reviewed articles and reports. This will include participating in cross-functional teams, particularly with the spatial and quantitative science teams and across the broader Conservation Division within which science is located.

Essential Functions

• Contribute to scientific data products in support of the national science climate team on Climate Science projects and Climate Watch. Also, provide support across the science team to the spatial, quantitative, Migratory Bird Initiative, Important Bird Area Program, or community science teams as required, including conducting spatial data analysis, data management, or data visualizations.
• Conduct dataset management, literature reviews, preparation of presentations, and writing of reports and/or scientific publications.
• Perform statistical and/or spatial analyses, as well as other data analyses, using various processing packages in R and ArcGIS or ArcPro.
• Perform data collection and/or data acquisition, data processing, data sharing, and data management of biological, climate, and/or carbon data.
• Conduct presentations, either virtually or in-person, for professional conferences, meetings, and on internal and external working groups, such as other NGOs, Universities, and state and federal agencies.
• Contribute to Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging and other Audubon community initiatives through participating in the science team’s EDIB working group as well as engaging in Affinity Groups or other working groups, such as the Environmental Justice working group, at Audubon

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in climate science, environmental studies, ecology, biology, ornithology, spatial ecology, conservation, environmental and/or climate justice, or a related field and a minimum of 2 years professional GIS or applied science experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
• Technical skills, to include some experience with some or all of the following:
  • Demonstrated ability to script statistical and spatial analyses in R and/or Python.
  • Demonstrated cartographic (map design) experience.
  • Skilled in the use of ArcGISPro, ArcGIS 10+; experience with ArcGIS Online strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, specifically Excel.
  • Experience working with large databases, especially related to biodiversity (e.g., eBird) preferred.
  • Experience working with environmental spatial data, specifically related to climate, landuse, and/or carbon data preferred.
  • Experience working with social science data, specifically at the intersection between people and nature and/or environmental or climate justice would be a plus.
• Self-motivated, excited to learn, and willing to tackle problems independently.
• Must possess excellent judgment, ability to work independently, and collaborate well with team members across a decentralized organization.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills, facilitating professional connections across internal teams and externally.
• Strong time and project management skills, including the ability to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize to meet deadlines.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, to include a scientific writing background to support peer-reviewed publications. Comfort interpreting information to both technical and non-technical audiences also important.
• Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to and experience in advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging.
• Interest in working to promote bird conservation across the US and Americas, and passion for the mission of the National Audubon Society
• Experience in ornithology, especially birds of the Americas, climate science/ecology preferred.
• Experience with environmental or climate justice also preferred
