Position Summary

CPI is recruiting for a Senior Analyst (Analyst) position offering an exciting opportunity to support CPI’s work in climate finance for agrifood systems more widely as well as the running of the ClimateShot Investor Coalition (CLIC)[1] and the CLIC’s Agrifood Investment Connector. We are looking for a professional with experience undertaking analysis of financial tools and approaches, or investments in (agri) businesses and a passion for scaling investment in climate and nature in agrifood systems in developing countries. You will have experience drawing on methodologies from economics, finance, public policy and other disciplines.

Food Systems and Agriculture is a critical sector within our wider climate finance work. Responsible for a third of global emissions of greenhouse gases; whilst critical to national security, there are many competing pressures on reform of the sector. CPI believe that there is immense potential in aligning to low carbon and resilient pathways of growth; addressing contradictory subsidy policy; sustaining the livelihoods of key communities and protecting and rehabilitating nature. Whilst challenging, this is a really exciting sector with lots of opportunity; we are looking for the right people to join our journey.

Reporting to the CLIC Manager, the Senior Analyst (Analyst) will engage with, and help set the ambition for, CPIs climate finance for agrifood systems portfolio and the CLIC program. You will need to quickly develop a solid understanding of the CPI and CLIC mission in the climate finance for agrifood systems space as well as the CPI/CLIC stakeholders and partners that drive it. You will support in developing strategy and governance, and forge partnerships with organisations including government clients, investors, funders, agriculture accelerators, deal rooms and programs.

You will gain exposure to a wide array of stakeholders in the agriculture and food systems investment space whilst drawing on CPI’s world class technical team focused on scaling-up and accelerating climate finance globally. The role will help ensure CPI and CLIC deliver high quality outputs on time and within budget.

The Senior Analyst (Analyst) will be assigned primary duties including, but not limited to, those outlined below.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Includes the following and other duties as assigned:

  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative impact assessments of agribusinesses/SMEs with a focus on climate and nature.
  • Support on identifying/developing/refining TA approaches to agribusinesses/SMEs including presentations/pitches and climate/nature risk and impact assessment tools and methods.
  • Help identify technical needs and source relevant internal and external expertise and tools/methods to co-develop the program of technical assistance support for agribusinesses/SMEs to strengthen their climate, nature, and biodiversity offerings.
  • Facilitate connections between key investors and agribusinesses/SMEs.
  • Support for agribusinesses/SMEs in preparation for pitch events, including the development of evidence to demonstrate investor eligibility, work planning and pitch packs.
  • Perform rigorous quantitative and qualitative analysis of climate finance mechanisms and interactions between public and private actors and resources.
  • Support in facilitating knowledge-sharing and dissemination of learnings across the organization and broader climate finance and ag and food systems investors’ community.

Qualifications, Experience & Competencies

  • BA or BS degree required with coursework/professional experience drawing on methodologies from finance, economics, and policy or interdisciplinary studies including development, climate, sustainability, agriculture. Post-graduate degree in a qualitatively/quantitatively rigorous field is desirable.
  • Relevant professional experience in management consulting, government, and/or a multilateral institution.
  • Analytical mind with a record of applying sound and strategic judgment to complex issues.
  • A passion for scaling investment in climate and nature in agrifood systems in developing countries.
  • Advanced user of MS Office suite, in particular Excel. Knowledge of database management systems such as SQL, R, Python would be an advantage.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, time management, and prioritization skills, and an ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines.
  • Flexibility, professionalism, enthusiasm for working as part of a team, and an ability to interact with a diverse array of people.
  • Fluency in English required (written, verbal). Other language skills highly desirable.
  • Deep commitment to the mission and values of CPI.

Highly Desirable

  • A passion for and proven experience in climate and nature, agriculture and agrifood systems.
  • Familiarity with international climate finance ideally with a focus on climate adaptation and resilience in the agriculture and food systems sectors.
  • Experience of investing in and developing capacity of agribusinesses/SMEs, with a strong understanding of agribusinesses/SMEs operations and needs, financing models, management capabilities, and practices as they relate to investment requirements.
  • Knowledge of the challenges for early-stage businesses in attracting finance, developing viable business models, and securing required support to proceed.
  • Experience working as part of an accelerator or technical assistance program for agri-businesses.
  • Exposure to emerging market and developing economies context, with direct experience in markets in Asia, Africa or Latin America valued.

Title & Compensation

Our programmes in the Food Systems and Agriculture space are set to expand significantly –as such we are keen to find the right candidate with the right background; and our willing to be flexible on our approach.

This position role could be at one of two levels: Senior Analyst or Analyst. We are interested in applications from candidates who would consider themselves more junior (Analyst), but believe they have the skills and competencies to grow into a Senior Analyst role. CPI offers an excellent and competitive compensation and benefits package, including a salary range of:

Analyst - £38,000 to circa £48,000 per annum depending upon experience.

Senior Analyst - £50,000 to circa £60,000 per annum depending upon experience.

This position is a permanent, full-time position based in our London office. CPI has adopted a hybrid working approach whereby staff are able to work remotely with 2 regular days per week based in our London office.
