Job Summary
The Island School’s Semester Teaching Fellowship program is an opportunity for people who are interested in pursuing a career in education. It is an ideal way for future teachers to immerse themselves in all aspects of boarding school life while receiving the support and training necessary to be successful as experiential educators. As a member of our community, teaching fellows will experience the day-to-day challenges of living on an island while also discovering the rewards of working with young people and other educators who share a similar dedication to academic rigor, environmental issues, and local culture.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Teach one class section of 13 students
- Work in conjunction with the lead teacher and Dean of Academics to develop and deploy curriculum
- Assist with community engagement and/or research activities and projects
- Fill additional support roles as called upon
- Tutor students in the evenings with assignments and homework, as well as potentially organize night classes
- Organize educational and recreational opportunities for students during free blocks in the semester schedule
- Support daily morning exercise
- Support and possibly assist/co-lead 4 and 8-day sea-kayaking expeditions and/or 5-day camping/down island trips
- Advise 4-6 students throughout the semester journey
- Be “on duty” 1-2 evenings per week and typically 2 weekend days per month to support student needs and after-school programming
- Participate with students and staff in the daily maintenance and care of the facility through chores and other tasks
- Support the Semester Mentor program in various capacities, especially in providing peer support, leadership, and organizing outings
- Create interdisciplinary connections between subjects and learning experiences
- Collaborate with researchers, staff, and other school employees to enhance the student experience and utilize our campus, resources, and location as a classroom
- Work professionally and cooperatively within the school community and broader South Eleuthera community
- Participation in weekly faculty and community meetings
- Participation in periodic professional development opportunities
- Participation in orientation, semester prep, and semester debrief
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree
- Demonstrated interest in outdoor education and experiential learning
- Strong interpersonal, communication (written and oral), and organizational abilities
- Proficient computer skills especially Google-suite use
- A commitment to culturally diverse teaching and learning
- Adaptability and flexibility for remote island living
- Driver’s License

Schedule
The Cape Eleuthera Island School and its related entities operate year-round and working hours vary depending on program needs. Programs and special events will require periods of time outside of normal working hours when staff must be on-site for extended periods. The successful candidate should expect and desire to work a variable and mission-driven schedule.
