Responsibilities

The Office of Chief Scientist (OCS) is the nexus of science at EDF, ensuring that the science that is the backbone for all EDF policy positions is based on the best available information. To be most effective in this role, OCS provides programmatic support for all scientists at EDF and fosters relationships with scientists outside the organization. OCS works closely with EDF Europe which is well placed to exploit near term opportunities to promote market-based solutions to accelerate the transition to a clean, low-carbon energy economy.

Overall Function

Environmental Defense Fund seeks a highly motivated Scientist to support its growing research on the potential and limitations of hydrogen for clean energy applications. This may include investigating the climate and other environmental implications of different hydrogen production methods, storage and distribution pathways, and end use applications. The Scientist will conduct scientific research and analyses to help inform and shape the organization's policy positions and support its advocacy regarding hydrogen and other zero and low-carbon energy options, opportunities, and challenges. The products of such analysis will include original publishable research, "in-house" analyses for use by other staff within the organization, as well as white papers aimed at policy makers, journalists, and the public at large. The successful candidate will report to a Climate Scientist in the Office of Chief Scientist and be an integral member of EDF’s cross-cutting science and policy team, working closely with colleagues in the United States, Europe, and across the globe.

Key Responsibilities

• Conducting rigorous original scientific research with a focus on the climate implications of hydrogen energy systems.

• Authoring and co-authoring hydrogen and other clean energy-related publications in the peer-reviewed literature.

• Key member of the climate science and hydrogen science teams, working with other staff and collaborators to identify long-term research needed to develop, inform and support the organization’s advocacy.

• Leading analytical assessments in support of EDF initiatives related to hydrogen, clean energy and policy.

• Overseeing collaborative research projects in partnership with other organizations outside of EDF (e.g., university-based experts and outside researchers).

• Summarizing EDF research and hydrogen/clean energy-related literature for a broad audience, as well as public communications including Op-Eds, print media, television, radio, and blog posts.

• Working with EDF’s development team, including communicating with donors and foundations and writing proposals to secure funding;

• Participating in the development of public positions taken by EDF.

• Representing EDF at public meetings including policy forums, academic conferences and workshops, gatherings of advocacy organizations, and the general public briefings.

• Stay abreast of hydrogen research and publications.

• Participating in advancing EDF DEI goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

• Independently support other "rapid response" and/or project development efforts on an as-needed basis.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in an energy/environmental field, preferably with a research focus relating to hydrogen.

• Two or more years of experience in original scientific research (which could include post-doctoral research).

• Proven ability to conduct cutting-edge scientific research.

• Ability to deploy a diversity of analytical approaches, theoretical and/or empirical studies to back-of-the-envelope analyses.

• Familiarity with the empirical and theoretical literature on clean energy systems.

• Experience with electrification of energy systems a bonus.

• Interest in applying scientific research to real-world policy and in bridging the worlds of advocacy and academia.

• Interest in applying expertise to big picture, system-wide thinking.

• Ability to convey scientific concepts to non-scientists and desire to communicate science to a broad range of audiences.

• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Minimum Salary

USD $95,000.00/Yr.

Maximum Salary

USD $106,000.00/Yr.
