šŸļøAbout the role

GVI is looking for a Science Coordinator who will support the Program Manager and field team at GVI’s research station in the Peruvian Amazon, which is focused on terrestrial conservation. This individual should be enthusiastic about wildlife in general, experienced in field research, and able to lead surveys and assist in the day-to-day running of the conservation programs.

You will facilitate the undertaking of all hub activities, including surveys, health and safety, as well as volunteer management. You will be working very closely with the Program Manager managing the hub and will also be responsible for our internship program. You will be monitoring the progress of all interns and will be providing support as a mentor. The candidate should be a flexible thinker and able to think on their feet and adapt according to the situation. A science background (minimum Masters) is a must, whether that's in degree form or extensive field experience.

Role and responsibilities:

  • Lead and support field staff, volunteers, and interns to deliver fieldwork and project activities safely and successfully.
  • Serve as a role model by demonstrating a strong work ethic and respect for different perspectives and cultures.
  • Assist with all scientific research/output/projects on base.
  • Deliver participant training workshops and oversee participants’ participation in project work and/or intern supervision.
  • The Science Coordinator needs a good knowledge of the required fieldwork and the science it is based on and reports to the Program Manager on project ideas, challenges, needs, or tasks.
  • Responsible for conducting surveys in a safe and consistent manner.
  • Mentoring interns.
  • Help to manage daily logistics, administration, and operational tasks, and oversee the completion of assigned tasks and deliverables.
  • Support the Program Manager in delivering reports and information as required by GVI.

  • Proven experience and competence in administration and logistics.
  • Experience or background in internship coordination and outreach or a similar field
  • Past volunteer or volunteer management work experience.
  • Conservation knowledge and research experience

  • Experience with data collection, entry and analysis.
  • Experience living in remote and basic conditions.
  • Experience doing fieldwork in tropical environments.
  • Skilled in species identification by visualisation and/or vocalisation.
  • Experience working with international volunteers.
  • University education in Biology or related studies (minimum Masters or equivalent).
  • Spanish and English speaking.

  • First Aid certified/trained
  • Previous GVI experience
