The Island School, a not-for-profit organization based in The Bahamas, was founded to create and support transformational educational experiences with the vision of leadership effecting change, on the island of Eleuthera. The diverse educational initiatives, including our High School Semester and Summer Term, Deep Creek Middle School, Elementary Learning Center, and our Community Engagement and Partnerships, deliver unique educational journeys in conjunction with the authentic and meaningful work our organization undertakes in research and sustainable development at the Cape Eleuthera Institute, our research and innovation hub. We are reimagining what education is for, and redesigning how education is delivered.
Job Summary
The role of the School Counselor is to provide social and emotional support to students and their families across our educational programs serving students age 3-18. Working closely with school leadership, our wellness team, educational teams, families and sending schools, the counselor identifies and addresses social/emotional and learning needs in individual students. Educational programming, including residential programs, run year-round; therefore, this is a 12-month position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Working in partnership with school leadership, wellness center staff and educational specialists, plan, implement and evaluate programs and services which are coordinated and well-aligned to meet the academic/social/emotional needs of local and international students inclusive of:
- Elementary school students
- Middle School students
- High school students in a semester-long residential program
- Deliver universal and targeted psychosocial programming to support student wellness (e.g middle school health curriculum, conflict resolution, managing anxiety and depression)
- Provide consultation, training, and workshops for faculty, employees and families to promote understanding of child/adolescent development, individual behavior and other relevant topics (e.g. mental health first aid, trauma informed classrooms, gender identity)
- Conduct strength-based assessments, coordinate services with outside professionals, and deliver short-term supportive counseling for students
- Coordinate student support services within the school and outside professionals (e.g. tutors, sending schools, primary therapists)
- Coordinate peer support groups (e.g. affinity and identity groups)
- Identify community resources (in-country, telehealth, etc.) and create external partnerships to bring needed resources and services to students
- Act as a change agent for systems to improve equity, access, achievement and opportunities for all students
- Provide critical resources and support for students in crisis
- Work strategically with the Wellness team, faculty/teachers, families, and the broader community to support students across all educational programs
- Establish and maintain professional relationships with administrators, faculty, school employees, families and community members
- Provide clinical, operational and strategic leadership necessary to support a diverse student body across multiple educational programs
Required Qualifications & Experience
- A Master's degree or above in Psychology, Social Work, School Counseling or other relevant field
- Experience and/or training in school settings and with children and adolescents
- Excellent communication skills, sound judgment and emotional maturity
- Unwavering commitment to professional and ethical standards and demonstrated intercultural competence
- A willingness to work non-traditional hours (evenings and weekends)
- Adaptability and flexibility for remote island living
