Summary of Role:
A Junior Energy Analyst based in Cape Town will be focused on the South African market and support global team efforts. The position does not require previous experience in wind or solar analysis or software. The position is supported by the central Energy Analysis Group (EAG) staff and works closely with Engineering, GIS, Supply Chain, Development and Commercial teams.
Main responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- Perform wind and solar PV green-fielding analysis.
- Perform and compile Energy Production Estimate reports.
- Design and optimise wind farm and solar farm layouts using commercial design codes.
- Assisting with new Measurement Campaign design and executions.
- Housekeeping of local repositories of Energy Analysis deliverables.
- Liaising with affiliated Contractors, Mainstream Project Managers, Finance, and SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environmental, and Quality) departments.
- Draft and manage Request for Proposals, Quotations, and 3rd Party accounts.
- Apply research and innovation in line with in-company ambitions.
What will you do:
- Design of optimal site-specific measurement campaigns for wind and solar sites, including cost/benefit assessments of different technologies.
- Wind farm turbine layout and solar farm design using in-company tools and guidelines.
- Overseeing installation, on-site validation, maintenance and decommissioning of temporary meteorological stations (including LiDAR units). Assist with HSSE activities when planning site surveys/installation inspections.
- Analysis and reporting of site measurements including meteorological masts and remote sensing devices.
- Overseeing the collection and quality control of meteorological data.
- Delivering internal wind/solar resources and energy production in accordance with required project timelines and company guidelines and procedures.
- Management and review of third-party energy production reports, ensuring optimal service from suppliers.
- Communication of site-specific energy production and site condition risks to project teams.
- Reviewing of data, energy production reports and site conditions reports for potential acquisition sites.
- Contribution to the EAG’s research and development, including reviewing and testing of tools and procedures in use in the EAG for conducting internal energy estimates.
- Support the Commercial, Procurement and Development with the key EAG deliverables for full compliance with renewable energy auctions.
- Support the Development team with the elaboration of annual budgets ensuring high quality measurements and EAG deliverables.
- Ensuring traceability and tidiness in the local repositories of Energy Analysis deliverables.
The above tasks will be carried out in-line with the Global EAG Standard Requirements.
What we require:
- We don’t require previous experience in wind or solar analysis. In-company training will be provided.
- Basic knowledge of wind and solar resource measurements, sensor types, and parameters.
- Highly analytical, with attention to detail and the ability to exercise sound engineering judgement.
- Programming/software development experience is an advantage. Ideally experienced with Python, Juypter notebook development and GitHub environment.
- Data science, Machine Learning and Optimisation basic knowledge will be an advantage.
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills are required.
- Knowledge of WindFarmer, AWS Openwind Enterprise, PVsyst, Homer or other related wind/solar resource assessment software is an advantage.
- Excellent communication skills, a strong mathematical and analysis background, and the ability to communicate technical issues to non-technical colleagues are essential.
- Fluency in English. Other languages are an advantage.
- Graduate with an honours engineering or physical science degree as a minimum. A master in science qualification is an advantage.
- Self-starter with an inquisitive nature.
- Willingness to learn and get involved in international projects.
- South African driving licence.
