Summary of Role:
As the Construction SHE Manager, you will provide expert advice and implement SHE strategy in relation to Mainstream’s construction projects and associated works. You will also be responsible for all necessary actions to ensure that relevant Health & Safety, Environmental legislation is identified and adhered too, and policies and practices are adopted. You will plan, implement, monitor, and review the protective and preventative measures that will ensure Construction activities are carried out without exposing projects to an unmanageable level to risk, breach of legal compliance and interruption, with SHE specific objectives and targets mainly focused in reducing risk, harm to people and environment.
What you will do?
- Develop market specific, within Mainstream’s global best practice, Environment, Health & Safety strategy for construction sites.
- Ensure compliance ISO 45001, 9001, & 14001 Management Systems for the Construction team
- Investigate and report all SHE incidents and ensure mitigation is implemented
- Plan practical and effective methods, to both prevent and remedy health and safety risks and ensure safe working practices.
- Liaise with Global SHE colleagues, including other functional area managers to ensure that SHE plans, and best practices are being shared and adopted.
- Be competent advisor on Environment, Health, Safety legislation in all Construction South Africa activities, including ensuring compliance with applicable and emerging SHE related laws and regulations as well as the Environmental and Safety management systems under ISO 14001, 45001 and ISO9001
- Coordinate and organize in-house SHE training for managers and employees regarding key HSE issues including lessons learnt.
- Chair the construction SHE Committee Meetings
- Organise and chair construction SHE Management Review Meetings
- Ensure emergency response plan implementation
- Establish a SHE Policy with the guidance of Mainstream SHE Global Standard Operating Procedures
- Carry out risk & opportunity assessment, investigations of all incidents and identify and take account of relevant hazards.
General Management
- Lead and management the Construction SHE teams including resourcing, recruitment and team performance management. Work with the Head of Construction to develop resourcing plans on an annual basis to support ongoing successful projects.
- Reporting of project activities in accordance with construction and stakeholders’ requirements.
- Monitor activities at the construction sites, using this data to trend and develop detailed forecasts and ensure that corrective actions are done timely.
What we require?
Education and Experience
- Relevant qualification, with a minimum of 5 years’ experience and registered as a Health, Safety & Environmental Professional (SACPCMP)
- Experience in renewable energy construction projects
- Capable of managing SHE across multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary teams.
- Setup and roll out of SHE strategies.
- Should be capable of managing internal and external resources.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office to efficiently deliver on market SHE requirements, as well as other software platforms Mainstream may engage with like SharePoint.

- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Ability to work in a team, coordinate and enthuse colleagues and consultants
- Strong initiative and the ability to proactively identify required tasks
- Excellent attention to detail
- Good IT skills, including experience with MS Word, Excel and Project packages.
