Researcher, Public Bank, Sustainable Finance
E3G is hiring for a Researcher position that will contribute to E3G’s work on redirecting finance and investment to deliver sustainable and inclusive development, focusing on the role of public banks like the World Bank in particular. The post-holder will contribute to research on the E3G Public Bank Climate Tracker Matrix, an online tool for assessing the Paris alignment of Multilateral Development Banks and bilateral Development Finance Institutions. This post will preferably be based in London or Berlin.

The role
The aim of the E3G Public Banks Programme is to turn Multilateral Development Banks and other public and development banks into transformational leaders of the transition to a climate-safe world. This role will be at the core workstream of the wider Public Bank’s programme and will have a particular focus on undertaking research on development finance institutions of all shapes and sizes. It will predominantly revolve E3G Public Bank Climate Tracker Matrix. There will also be opportunities to engage with the staff of these institutions and to have exposure to other E3G work programmes, such as climate diplomacy and clean economy.
Key Responsibilities
Helping to ensure that public banks, in particular Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs), accelerate the transition towards a climate-safe world.
Delivery of research, and qualitative and quantitative analysis for E3G’s Public Bank Climate Tracker Matrix, to support a portfolio of projects under the E3G Public Banks Programme.
Analysing and assessing policies relevant to the climate ambition of development finance institutions and other public banks.
Producing internal and external communications materials in collaboration with internal/external stakeholders, e.g., E3G policy briefings, reports, social media content in the framework of E3G’s Public Bank Climate Tracker Matrix and undertaking wider analysis.
Coordinating with other E3G teams in order to facilitate improvements to the matrix and expand its use across E3G.
Monitor changes at MDBs and Public Banks and provide updates to the wider Sustainable Finance department and all E3G, as well as to external stakeholders.
Support engagement and play a leading role in building and managing E3G relationships with relevant stakeholders in the public bank's ecosystem across different regions, including bank officials, shareholders, NGOs, and policymakers.
Perform administrative support activities to facilitate internal/external engagement efforts.
Develop new areas of interest/future E3G work around public banks.
Any other reasonable management request.
Experience and skills
The candidate should be able to demonstrate a high level of initiative and be positive, organised, resilient and able to deliver high quality work on time. They should demonstrate attention to detail combined with the ability to analyse complex information to create high-level summaries.
An undergraduate degree, and ideally a post graduate degree, in a relevant discipline where possible. This could include politics, social sciences, economics, finance, climate change, environment or international relations.
Relevant professional experience and track record in a relevant setting e.g., political, policy or research in government or international institution, civil society, think tank or research institute.
A good working understanding of the implications of the low carbon transition on the finance sector and of the role of finance in sustainable development. Knowledge or experience in the public bank policy landscape and decision-making processes would be an advantage.
Experience of advocating for solutions, and of communicating using a range of different media, e.g. reports, blogs, press, social media.
Quantitative data analysis skills are highly desirable.
Very strong written communication skills and impeccable English as well as a good working knowledge of Spanish and/or French.
The indicative salary range for this role in London is £27,000 - £31,998 / in Berlin is €30,830 – €36,535 per annum FTE, dependant on experience, qualification and location of the chosen candidate.
