Program/Department Overview
The Economics team at EDF works to develop climate solutions that create jobs, build resilient communities, and cut pollution effectively and equitably. One important initiative within this mission is to help build capability around the world to identify low-cost pathways to decarbonize the electricity sector, a key component of future clean energy systems. This work will help prevent climate change by identifying effective decarbonization options and providing the insight needed to mobilize investment and international support to build clean power systems. This work supports our efforts on Decarbonizing the U.S. Power System and Global Carbon Pricing.
Overall Function
For much of the work described above, we are training people to use Switch, an open-source model for planning clean power systems. In this position, you will be supervised by the Assoc. VP for Modeling, Mapping and Analytics, who is also the lead author of Switch. Switch is innovative and widely used, but needs a few more updates to make it more effective. The intern will work with the supervisor to write Python code to extract documentation and component properties from the Switch source code and build rich documentation as HTML and/or RST files. Depending on time and interest, the intern may also write Python code to extend Switch’s capabilities and improve its ease of use. The new code will be released as open-source and the intern will become a coauthor of the Switch codebase.
