React-native tech lead

We are looking for a react-native tech lead to take the lead of our Android and iOS app development in our Community Experience Team, making it better for millions of users globally, while at the same time having a direct impact on fixing the climate crisis. You will help to define and implement the strategic direction of our app, and collaborate with engineers to ship code continuously. You will partner with engineers and product to help drive best practices, success criteria, and contribute to a culture of engineering excellence.

As the react-native tech lead, you will get a lot of responsibility, leading a team of 8 other developers, ensuring that development processes are optimised and providing an amazing user experience to our community users. You have the passion for architecting delightful, intuitive, and scalable front-end applications that are responsive and easy to learn and use. You take pride in building both a system and writing great code as well as being a role model to others.

We value freedom and autonomy with accountability for your own time. All of our roles are remote working roles, but we do try and have quarterly/half-yearly in person meetups with the larger tech team/company (when possible). We live for our mission, but like to have fun along the way!

Main Responsibilities

  • Architect and help set the technical direction for large-scale React and React Native web applications
  • Optimise the mobile app for resiliency, scalability, and performance
  • Lead and mentor other team members in front end feature development
  • Set technical standards and best practices for the team
  • Ensure the technical feasibility of UI/UX designs
  • Design and implement features with user privacy and security at top of mind
  • Participate in all aspects of software development activities including design, scoping, coding, code review, testing, and bug fixing
  • Work closely with the Engineering Manager, Product, Design, and other cross-functional groups to drive product vision
  • Explore and prototype new technologies to incorporate into the development effort
  • Setting the operational standards to improve end user experience, tracking, and improving key metrics
  • Championing engineering excellence

Essential Experience

  • Experience architecting mobile applications with react native for large scale user bases, ideally for customer facing products
  • Proven track record of leadership skills, influencing within and outside their team
  • Accomplished hands-on leader with experience building mobile apps using react-native
  • Great communication skills and ability to drive consensus with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience building mobile native apps through the entire software development lifecycle
  • Confident knowledge of the latest mobile development best practices and common pitfalls
  • Detailed knowledge of both iOS and Android platforms. e.g. store submission processes, push notifications
  • Experience working with RESTful APIs
  • Great coaching and mentorship skills
  • Solid foundations and experience in JavaScript and Flow/Typescript
  • Agile processes and Test Driven Development, ideally in a multiple team environment
  • Able to work well individually and with a team
  • Good work ethic, self-starter, and results oriented

Ideal experience

  • Experience working within mobile applications providing technical guidance across multiple teams
  • Experience working in companies during hyper growth
  • Experience with automated UI testing
  • Experience with some of the specific client side tools and libraries we already use:
    ○ Redux
    ○ React-navigation
    ○ Storybook
    ○ React-native-web
  • Experience improving accessibility in mobile applications
  • Experience improving performance of react native app, for mid to low - end devices (Android and iOS)
