We are looking for a skilled synthetic chemist with a consistent track record of design and synthesis of wide range of porous materials/sorbents (mainly Metal Organic Framework-MOF) and proven understanding of “reticular chemistry”. Hands-on experience and an extensive background in MOF synthesis is required. A successful candidate will work with a multi-functional team and external vendors to design, develop, and support materials development efforts for our next-generation sorbent. This job is located on-site at R&D centre of excellence of Svante located at Burnaby (near Vancouver), BC, Canada.

This R&D material synthesis chemist takes personal responsibility that, at all times, he/she represents Svante Goals and Values to internal and external customers and suppliers.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Conduct lab work (synthesis, characterization using TGA, FTIR, DVS, etc.) on sorbent, especially Metal organic Frameworks (MOF) development & synthesis for carbon capture application
  • Work with multi-functional teams to investigate and explore new functional MOF materials concepts, determine technical feasibility, and project implementation plan beyond initial proof of concept
  • Collaborate with molecular modeling group to develop a practical synthesis method of novel MOFs
  • Document experimental record, observation, data analysis and summarization
  • Conduct “kg” scaling up sorbent synthesis works based on bench-scale results
  • Assist in external material development collaborations
  • Improve sorbent synthesis, post-treatment and performance of current sorbents already developed
  • Present work results in written and oral format by means of technical reports
  • Comply with the health and safety policies; maintain a safe, clean, and organized environment
  • Follow lean culture of Svante

Key Qualifications:

  • Bachelor, Master or PhD (in chemistry/organic chemistry/Chemical Engineering/Material Science or related field)
  • 2-5 years of hands-on experience in academic or industrial lab setting on organic synthesis, MOF synthesis, Zeolite, Porous Carbon or other sorbents
  • Having background/experience in MOF design/synthesis and reticular chemistry is a critical asset
  • Ability to work both independently and with cross-functional teams
  • Proof record of publications in the material/sorbent development for CO2 capture is an asset
  • Flexible time schedule when necessary and ability to organize, re-prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Good time management and detail
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Able to lift at least 25lb
  • Experience with TGA, ASAP2020, BET, FTIR, SEM, XRD characterization techniques is an asset
  • Familiar with Design of Experiment (DOE) is an asset
  • Good communication skills
  • Able to summarize and present his/her works
