About the opportunity

SWCA Environmental Consultants is seeking a Project-Level Environmental Planner to support environmental planning and stakeholder engagement for our Raleigh, NC office. This is a regular, full-time, hourly position (with benefits) that is a career growth opportunity to join SWCA’s expanding environmental planning and stakeholder engagement practice. The title/level and compensation of the Project Environmental Planner will be based on individual qualifications and experience.

The requisition can hire for 2 levels of this position:

  • Assistant Project Environmental Planner- Typically 3 years of relevant experience
  • Associate Project Environmental Planner- Typically 5 years of relevant experience

What you will accomplish

  • Work closely with a team of planners and technical specialists to conduct public and stakeholder engagement and prepare planning documents such as climate resilience plans, natural hazard risk assessments, NEPA analyses, and water resource management plans
  • Research and write sections for environmental planning documents such as climate resilience plans, natural hazard risk assessments, NEPA analyses, and water resource management plans, and synthesize information from technical environmental background studies and plans prepared by technical experts. These might include Hazard Mitigation Plans, local land use plans, water management studies, and climate data and projections
  • Support stakeholder engagement and public meetings (in-person and virtual). This may include preparing stakeholder engagement plans, managing scheduling and logistics for meetings, facilitating internal and external meetings, coordinating production of outreach materials, and tracking action items and progress toward project milestones
  • Prepare external communications and stakeholder engagement materials such as meeting agendas and summaries, flyers, display boards, presentation slides, fact sheets, and press releases

Experience and qualifications for success

Required:

  • Bachelor's Degree in related discipline such as urban planning, environmental science, or related field and at least three (3) years of relevant experience OR Master's Degree (preferred) with an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling 3 years
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, including interpreting technical information for non-technical audiences and comfort engaging with people from a variety of backgrounds
  • Education or experience in coastal issues, climate resilience, and/or water resource management
  • Strong logic, organization, attention to detail, and document management skills
  • Ability to take initiative and manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Flexibility and willingness to learn and have fun as part of collaborative teams
  • Desire to continue building skills and grow into increased management responsibilities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in environmental planning, environmental science, or another science-related field
  • Experience preparing risk assessments, climate resilience, land use, or water resources plans
  • Experience in small/rural communities in the Southeast and/or working with local governments
  • Working knowledge of NEPA and other environmental laws and regulations
  • Knowledge of GIS programs

An employee in this Raleigh, NC - based position can expect the following hourly ranges: Assistant Project Environmental Planner- $26.50/hr. to $34.00/hr.; Associate Project Environmental Planner- $30.00/hr. to $38.50/hr. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law.  Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
