SWCA is looking for experienced GIS applications developer to support our growing geospatial team. This position will be responsible for scripting, workflow management, database administration, web and mobile GIS applications, and application development (front-end and back-end) within our GIS program. The candidate will work closely with other developers throughout the company to identify and create solutions that streamline and innovate GIS tasks related to SWCA’s environmental consulting business.

The GIS Developer role at SWCA will serve a primary point of contact and lead on projects that involve the creation or customization of GIS solutions, particularly related to workflow automation, web development, and deployment of mobile data collection solutions. In this position the candidate will engage with GIS staff, project teams, and scientists across the company as part of requirements gathering efforts. As part of the geospatial team, this position will also support corporate initiatives and projects throughout the company. This position will develop and maintain custom tools and promote the practical application of GIS technologies.
This fast-paced job requires the ability to multitask while maintaining technical precision and active engagement with numerous project teams.
Responsibilities include:
Supporting map production, data management through scripting and task automation
Developing and deploying custom mobile data collection solutions in ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123, Fulcrum, or similar mobile data collection platforms
Working with and integrating data in an ArcGIS Enterprise/Portal and AGOL environment
Web development using Python/ArcPy, JavaScript, and other opensource platforms (GDAL, GeoPandas, etc) to implement custom GIS solutions
Creating, updating, and/or improving GIS databases, tools, and applications
Developing scripts and models for geoprocessing as well as process and workflow automation; building tools and/or scripts to help in the automation of deliverables and the integration of spatial data with other programmable applications
Working with metadata, preparing quality assurance measures, and performing quality control of geospatial data through programmatic means
Creating and customizing the practical application of configurable map applications using Esri’s Python and JavaScript APIs
Providing technical leadership and guidance to other staff working on customization, extension, and automation efforts
Developing training materials and manuals, coordinating, and conducting user applications training; documenting processes for future use
Following best practices during the software development cycle
Evaluating computer, hardware, and software systems for future use in data collection, data processing, and other activities
Working with GIS leadership to test and improve company capabilities in GIS
We seek a team member who possesses demonstrated experience in product management, environmental consulting, mobile data collection, and adapting to and learning innovative technologies and applying them quickly in a fast-paced environment.
We seek the following specific qualities:
REQUIRED:
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Geography, Anthropology, Biology, Environmental Science, Computer Science/Engineering, or related field with an emphasis in GIS (or GIS certificate)
A minimum of three (3) years' experience as a GIS developer, application specialist, or similar role with demonstrated increasing levels of professional-level responsibility
Extensive utilization of the Esri Platform and fluency with ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online/Enterprise
Experience with Python, JavaScript, or similar development language, and practical web and/or GIS application development experience is required.
Practiced application and/or customization of mobile apps such as Survey123, Field Maps, Fulcrum or similar is required
PREFERRED or HELPFUL:
Master’s degree in Geography, Anthropology, Biology, Environmental Science, Computer Science/Engineering, or related field with an emphasis in GIS
Previous experience as a GIS Developer in the environmental consulting industry supporting projects with natural and cultural resource issues related to wind, transportation, oil/gas, and/or renewables projects.
Strong organizational skills related to scheduling time on projects and meeting deadlines while working within an organized file structure protocol.
Ability to manage complex tasks, and to work effectively with large project teams and solve problems that arise in an efficient and diplomatic manner.
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Experience with geospatial concepts and systems (ArcGIS, ArcObjects, Map Services (WMS, WFS, WMTS, GDAL, geospatial data formats, etc.)
Experience with Geospatial Data Processing Tools (GDAL, PostGIS, GeoPandas)
Experience with AWS, GCP, Microsoft Azure, or other cloud services
Technical certification Network +, Security +, Oracle or specializing in Software Development, or Cloud Computing.
Experience with Microsoft and ArcGIS integration (ArcGIS for Microsoft 365)
A working understanding of agency internal processes and procedures and positive existing relationships with federal land management and regulatory agencies, such as the BLM, USFS, NPS, BOR, DOE, DOT, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and/or U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS).

_In Pasadena, an employee in this position can expect a rate between $_29.81/hour to $38.25/hour at the Assistant Project Geospatial Scientist level and $33.47/hour to $43.03/hour at the Associate Project Geospatial Scientist level. Actual pay within this range may depend on experience, qualifications, geographic location, client requirements where applicable, and other factors permitted by law. Regular-status employees are also eligible for performance bonuses.
