Global Water Center is a forward-thinking nonprofit organization based in Charleston, South Carolina. We exist to create an international movement of individuals and organizations that collaboratively eradicate water poverty for the more than 2 billion people who lack reliable access to safe and affordable drinking water services. The Global Water Center’s learning solutions program aims to build technical competence and professionalism in the WASH sector that is essential for establishing, maintaining, and scaling universal access to safe water. To accomplish this, we offer publishing and training as a service to WASH sector organizations that support safe, piped water services in low- and middle-income countries.
What is the opportunity?
The Project Engineer is a full-time position reporting to the Program Director for Professional Services. The Project Engineer is responsible for applying sound engineering principles, excellent analytical skills, and quality written and verbal communication to a variety of safe water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) projects worldwide. This project engineer position will focus on consultant engineering for Global Water Center’s partner organizations. This consultant work will include engineering design, technical review of documents, in-person and virtual training, installation and operation of equipment, and various means of proactive communication with partner organizations.
Travel to remote in country locations is required. Professional travel of up to three to six months per year (i.e., multiple trips during a single calendar year totaling three to six months) may be required. The average trip length will range from one to two weeks.
This position will be based in Charleston, SC.
Key responsibilities include:
- Model the Global Water Center’s core values of love, excellence, and integrity to colleagues, partners, prospects, vendors, and the public.
- Represent the Global Water Center’s brand to external audiences including potential funders, partners, subject matter experts, training partners, and training customers.
- Work in a team environment to provide technical direction and assistance to partner organizations, other engineers, and technicians.
- Ability to work within cross-cultural environments and to overcome stereotypes and language barriers.
- Develop and analyze engineering documentation and designs for WASH projects in developing countries:
- Conduct field inspections and site assessments in developing countries.
- Create feasibility studies and engineering reports.
- Create standard and project-specific engineering designs, calculations, construction drawings, and specifications.
- Demonstrated ability to cross engineering disciplines and gain a base level of understanding as required by projects.
- Demonstrated ability to learn how to install and operate WASH related equipment to include Remote Monitoring equipment and sensors.
- Ability to work simultaneously on multiple projects and ensure work is done within an agreed upon scope, schedule, and budget.
- Maintain good communications with multiple partner organizations and team members across multiple countries and time zones.
- Assist in the development of engineering standards for worldwide projects.
- Prepare and make presentations to partner organizations, other departments, strategic partners, and donors.
What is required?
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Electrical, Environmental, or Chemical Engineering.
- Engineering Intern (EIT) status preferred; Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) status considered.
- 0-5 years of engineering experience.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship and/or US Passport.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
- Knowledgeable skills with office computer programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook) and engineering programs such as EPANET, Microsoft Project, AutoCAD, etc.
- Strong team building skills.
- High attention to detail.
- Excellent analytical skills.
- Experience in developing countries.
- Ability and willingness to travel internationally.
