PROGRAMME LEAD, UK ENERGY TEAM, LONDON

E3G is looking for a Programme Leader to lead our UK Energy Team, working to secure the decarbonisation of power, housing and industry and end oil and gas production. This role will be based in E3G's London office.

Role Overview

This Programme Leader is a political strategist who will lead E3G's efforts to achieve the deep and rapid decarbonisation of our energy system, to meet the UK’s climate targets and build a prosperous green future whilst securing a just transition. The team takes a whole-systems approach, considering the renewables needed to generate power, the infrastructure needed to distribute it, right through to the homes and industries where we use it in our day to day lives. The Programme Leader will support the team to identify high-ambition policy-outcomes and leverage political opportunities to secure them, leading our political engagement and mobilising strategic cross-sector coalitions to support our vision.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of 6 staff members working on energy system decarbonisation, whilst also collaborating with colleagues working on other UK related programmes, including sustainable finance and climate diplomacy. Ensure that the team operates within a supportive environment, promoting positive wellbeing and fostering positive team working, collaboration and E3G culture. Work with heads of office, senior management team and human resources.
  • Lead development of the UK political strategy to secure ambitious energy campaign outcomes, develop the systems to leverage our political impact, build cross party support and lead political engagement on our UK energy priorities.
  • Support the team to set strategic direction and lead forward planning and horizon scanning in cooperation with the Campaigns Director. Key activity areas will include ensuring an ambitious framework for clean power, housing decarbonisation, industrial decarbonisation, and ending production of oil and gas.
  • Build up and maintain networks of parliamentarians, NGOs, industry, civil servants, funders, journalists, and experts to help deliver ambitious outcomes. Represent the team externally with partners, funders and with media and in public forums as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in other country offices working on energy issues to share knowledge and ensure progress in the UK is leveraged globally.
  • Develop expertise and contribute thought leadership inside and outside E3G in core areas, to ensure E3G remains at the cutting edge of climate action.
  • Manage set up, delivery, tracking and reporting of a portfolio of grants including planning, allocating and overseeing resources and work, working with team to set objectives and priorities, and ensuring risk management and course correction in response to emerging challenges and opportunities.
  • UK travel may be required, but we are open to discussing this if this would otherwise become a barrier to your application.

Profile and Requirements

You are a compassionate team leader with expertise supporting members of staff to reach their potential, with a strong emphasis on well-being and creating a supportive environment. You are a UK political expert, with good networks across Parliament and the civil service. You have energy policy experience. You are a highly strategic thinker, with significant expertise in campaigning, political or public affairs work. You are committed to high quality outputs even when under pressure and use collaboration to achieve better outcomes. You are a creative thinker and able to learn fast.

Experience and skills

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • Demonstrated passion and commitment for tackling climate change in a socially just way.
  • Team management experience including line management, delegation, team building, performance management, with a strong regard to well-being.
  • Experience of delivering ambitious strategic outcomes for a portfolio of energy campaign or policy work that includes multiple cross-sectoral projects, providing strategic oversight and guidance to colleagues as well as taking a practical role to directly support delivery.
  • Deep understanding and experience of working on UK political influencing to achieve policy outcomes, with strong political connections.
  • Policy expertise related to energy issues (housing, power, industrial transitions and oil and gas).
  • A strong network of contacts working across energy-related issues in the UK (including politics, industry, civil society and media).
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills, including experience of building alliances and engaging with high-level policy stakeholders.
  • Experience of budget management, project management and program management, preferably in the context of grant-funded work.
  • Fundraising experience.

  • E3G offers a reward and benefits package which compares well with other organisations within our sector. The salary range for this position is £60,700 - £66,000 and is dependent on experience, qualification of the chosen candidate.

E3G is unable to provide any relocation assistance to candidates who would need to move in order to take up this position. E3G will require candidates to demonstrate that they have the right to live and work in the jurisdiction in which E3G employs them.
