PROGRAMME LEAD, GLOBAL ENERGY TRANSITION, MATERNITY LEAVE COVER, LONDON
E3G is looking for an interim Programme Leader for Global Energy for the period of October 2024-July 2025. The role will be central to delivering E3G’s strategy on energy diplomacy linking holistic energy system work including gas, energy systems, clean energy, and global energy transition issues including energy security and geopolitics of fossil fuels transition. The role will be pivotal to building engagement at with key diplomacy institutions in the UK and strengthening the engagement with EU and the EU Member States.

Role Overview
Building a climate safe world requires a fast, equitable and well-managed decarbonisation of energy system in all key regions in the world. The Global Energy Transition Team, placed within E3G’s Energy Transition Petal aims to create international political conditions to effectively address the “messy middle” of global energy transition and enable a sustainable and equitable transformation of the global energy sector while managing the geopolitical and security risks that will be inevitably accompanying this structural shift.
2024 marks multiple shifts in the political leadership including in the UK, the European Union and later on the United States whereas energy and energy systems transition will stay high on the agenda albeit in a changing political context where energy security, competitiveness and geopolitics dominate the discussions at the highest political level.
Amid this changing political landscape and the continued geopolitical volatility, in 2024-25, E3G’s Global Energy Transition Programme will work to anchor a well-managed and adequately paced global energy transition in UK’s and EU’s external action throughout bilateral formats and instruments and the global diplomacy moments.
The Challenge
E3G is looking for an individual with a deep understanding of UK and EU’s foreign energy policy and politics as well as energy systems transition to play a key role in shaping and delivering our political strategy and engagement process.
Key Responsibilities
The role of the programme leader for Global Energy Transition will be to develop and deliver E3G’s strategy for driving the global energy transition. This person will work closely with E3G’s other programmes – including the programmes on EU sustainable finance; EU energy, UK energy, Climate Diplomacy and Geopolitics, Public Banks and Development, Industry and Trade - to deliver transformational outcomes. The Programme Lead will directly report to E3G’s Energy Transition Director. The Programme Lead will lead a team of 3. The post-holder will be part of E3G’s Programme Leader Group, contributing to organisational strategy, management and culture and peer support.
The candidate’s main focus will be to:
Oversee the team and grants delivery
Ensure alignment of GET team’s outcomes and activities with E3G strategic priorities
Work closely with EU Energy; Climate and Geopolitics; Coal to Clean; Public Banks and Development teams
Drive E3G’s engagement with the UK foreign energy policy stakeholders in close coordination with GET SPA and the Campaign Director
Support and guide Global Energy Transition Team’s high-level engagement with the EU energy diplomacy apparatus and with the key Member States, in close coordination with the Programme Lead for EU Energy, the Brussels Office Director and the Berlin Office Director.
Lead on the establishment of high-impact coalitions to shape the global energy governance towards a safe transition for all, including the Cool coalition, fossil fuel producer-consumer dialogue, gas importers coalition and the net zero power coalition.
Manage and support the development of the team.
Profile and requirements
You have established professional experience with progressive levels of responsibilities as well as strong leadership and management skills.
You have demonstrable influencing skills, strong strategic and political understanding, and a track record of significant achievements in international relations and/or foreign energy policy in the UK and/or EU or its Member States.
You have an established network with politicians, policy-makers, and civil society in London, Brussels or other European capitals.
You have very strong written communication skills, impeccable English and the ability to adapt your style (written and verbal) to any audience from technical experts, politicians or the wider public. The ability to communicate in other languages is an asset but not a prerequisite.
You have excellent stakeholder management skills, including experience of convening and chairing discussions, engaging with high-level policy stakeholders. You will be known for the enthusiasm and energy you bring to those around you, and the way you support people with your expertise on politics and the global energy transition.
Experience in programme management, internal change processes, fundraising and managing funders relationships is a plus.
You have an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (required) and post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline (desirable).
We will require availability for occasional international travel.

E3G offers a reward and benefits package which compares well with other organisations within our sector. The salary range for this position is between £60.700 – £68,700 and is dependent on experience, qualification of the chosen candidate.
You will be integrated in a dynamic organisation working to deliver climate safety for all, surrounded by friendly experts working on energy, buildings, industry decarbonation, finance, foreign policy, and more.
