JOB CONTEXT

Hivos is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Project Officer – Climate Justice in Brazil to support the implementation of its programs. The primary focus will be on the G2C2 (Global Girls Creating Change) program, with additional responsibilities for other relevant programs as needed.

The Project Officer will work within the broader context of Hivos' commitment to social justice and sustainable development. Specifically, the G2C2 program aims to empower girls to lead inclusive climate action and influence climate policies at multiple levels. The project is ambitious, requiring coordination across multiple countries (Nepal, Uganda, Brasil, and Indonesia) and stakeholders, and the Project Officer will play a critical role in achieving its objectives over a 24-month period. The Project Officer for the Girls to Climate Change (G2C2) project plays a pivotal role in guaranteeing a smoothly implementation of the project in Brazil, but also supporting the Program Manager in the leadership of the Consortium that implements G2C2 in Nepal, Uganda, and Indonesia.

G2C2 Program Theory of Change:

IF girls in all their diversity are supported through capacity building, mentorship, an enabling ecosystem, and access to resources including capital to co-create and lead climate innovations in their communities AND girls' climate coalitions are empowered to voice their priorities in national and global dialogues, networks, and platforms THEN girls from diverse backgrounds will be recognized and active as agents of social transformation LEADING TO an elevated movement of girl-centered climate action that shapes equitable, inclusive climate policies and actions.

The project has three interlinked objectives over the 36-month period:

  1. To support girls, in all their diversity, to develop the skills and capacity to engage in and lead inclusive climate action.
  2. To foster a diverse coalition of girls from 4 in-country programming countries (above) and up to 25 coalition countries to participate in and influence equitable climate policies at local, national, regional and global levels.
  3. To provide 26 grants, training and other support for girls in four countries to co-create climate innovations in their communities

The PO will also will also support the implementation of the program Voices for Climate Action in Brazil, a program that is managed in cohesion with G2C2 and count with similar partners, goals and strategy for Brazil.

MAIN GOAL OF THE JOB

The Programme Officer (PO) contributes to the performance of a Hivos program. This can involve business development, fund management, program implementation, or scaling-up efforts. Within the G2C2, the PO supports Hivos' team in implementing its activities and the activities of the four countries engaged, which focus on climate justice and gender equality. The role of the Project Officer is broad, encompassing research, consultancy, social action, and co-creation. The PO works closely with other staff members, such as the Finance Officer, Program Assistant, and G2C2 country peers, to facilitate south-south collaboration on climate justice.

Specific Responsibilities

The PO supports the Global Program Manager in a variety of tasks, including:

  • Selecting and procuring potential partners and necessary consultancies
  • Facilitating regional team communication
  • Liaising with partners and monitoring progress and deliverables
  • Communicating program progress and results to the global program management team and Hivos colleagues in Hub Latam (San Jose, Costa Rica), other G2C2 countries (Indonesia, Uganda, and Nepal), and the global office (The Hague)
  • Preparing stories and content for the website, new media, and other channels
  • Organizing internal and external events

Additionally, the PO assists the Program Manager in outcome harvesting, narrative assessment, and other reporting tasks required for DMEL (Design, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning) activities and the program. This includes preparing partner and Hivos' own implementation reports. The PO also provides logistical and financial support to the Global Program Manager and works in close collaboration with the Financial Officer.

REQUIREMENTS

This is a medior position for nationals or residents of Brazil:

  • Degree in multidisciplinary areas such as law studies, international development, social sciences, or another relevant field;
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant working experience preferable in advocacy and influencing strategies
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in coalition building, activism, advocacy in climate change and / or social justice areas
  • Expertise in climate justice, gender equality and methodology (co-creation, social innovation). Minimum of three to five years working experience in Climate justice, gender equality. Knowledge of relation between climate change and daily needs of people such as food, energy and water in Brazil
  • Language skills: Portuguese (native); English (Fluent) and Spanish (desirable)
  • Experience working with climate issues, and climate justice
  • Experience working with gender intersectional approaches
  • Understanding of country political and social dynamics and climate justice social movements; analytical and conceptual skills, and ability to translate these into relevant and timely actions
  • Knowledge of project management tools and systems
  • Remote conference management
  • Level skills: cooperation, influence, leadership.
  • Willing to travel (approx. 30% time of travel, national and international) and work in a multicultural environment
  • Job skills: communication, project management, independence
  • Experience in partner relationship building
  • Good networking, relationship building and negotiation skills;
  • Relevant academic level of working, thinking and revising documents.
