About the Position

CBED offers three programs within its Teaching Pathways programming: Freedom Schools Literacy Academy, Teaching Academy, and the Black Teacher Pipeline Fellowship Program. Freedom Schools Literacy Academy (FSLA) is a 4-week summer apprenticeship program that prepares high-school and college-aged aspiring educators by way of providing literacy intervention to elementary school scholars. Teaching Academy (TA) is our in-school intellectually rigorous CTE curriculum that exposes high school students to Black pedagogy and historical frameworks and hands-on practicum experience to prepare them for a career in teaching. Lastly, the Black Teacher Pipeline Fellowship (BTPF) provides last-dollar scholarships and professional development programming to college students majoring in education, with the opportunity to earn a stipend once they’ve entered their fifth year of teaching.

Reporting to the Managing Director of Training & Implementation, the Program Manager is responsible for the high-quality execution of in-person summer Freedom Schools Literacy Academy in Philadelphia and Teaching Academy. They are responsible for providing central oversight, training, and leadership in the implementation of programming to ensure we meet goals and operate with fidelity to our mission. They work very closely with the Curriculum Department (responsible for content) and the Program Operations Department (responsible for program operations) to launch, execute, and continually improve programming.

Responsibilities

Freedom Schools Literacy Academy (May through August)

• Lead the training for site based-staff
• Support in the creation of training content through collaboration with the Curriculum Department on the instructional components and with the Program Operations Department on the operational components of training
• Manage and supervise up to 4 Site Leads across all 4 sites in Philadelphia; lead weekly 1:1s and support Site Leads in the execution of programming
• Provide oversight for the completion of instructional deliverables, including lesson plans, observation forms, surveys, and coaching plans
• Train coaches on delivering professional development sessions and conducting coaching sessions
• Visit sites weekly; identify obstacles, gaps, challenges and implement plans to address them, in collaboration with the Program Operations Manager
• Communicate any feedback on curriculum content to the Curriculum department
• Provide central oversight to ensure curriculum is being delivered as designed
• Monitor the overall instructional quality, health, and fidelity of programming towards goals, in alignment with CBED’s mission

Teaching Academy (Year-round)

• Internalize the curriculum for TA courses, as created by Curriculum Department
• Manage a small cohort of TA facilitators and school sites
• Support the creation of content for Summer Training & Implementation Sessions with TA facilitators
• Prepare for and hosts monthly virtual coaching sessions with TA facilitators
• Conduct 2 site visits and in-person coaching sessions, per site, with TA facilitators
• Provide on call curriculum support to TA facilitators; monitor their progress through the curriculum
• Identify gaps, obstacles, and challenges in the implementation of courses or curriculum content; collaborates with the Curriculum Department and Program Operations Department to address them
• Monitor the overall quality, health, and fidelity of programming towards goals, in alignment with CBED’s mission

Background and Experience Expectations

• Bachelor’s degree in education or related field

• Minimum of two (2) years leadership experience in an education setting, plus at least two (2) years of experience in program development

• Demonstrated experience coaching and mentoring teachers

• Exceptional communication, presentation/facilitation, and interpersonal skills

• Strong project management skills; detailed oriented and organized with strong ability to successfully manage multiple projects

• Must be located in the Philadelphia metropolitan area and able to travel to FSLA sites in Philadelphia and TA sites across the country

• Ability to work efficiently both independently and as part of a collaborative teams

• Thorough understanding of what it takes to operate and execute high-quality programming and tenacious dedication to doing so
