ABOUT THE ROLE

If so, then this is an opportunity for you to join a growing team focused on helping utilities rise to the challenge of taking urgent action on climate change. 3Degrees is seeking a Product Development Manager to be the “messenger of the market” as we develop new products and services to help natural gas utilities deliver cost-effective, compelling options for their customers to address their carbon emissions. In this role, you will work closely with cross-functional teams across the company to manage our existing product suite to gas utilities while also leading new product and service development for our gas utility clients.
This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Associate Director, Product Innovation and ideally located in Portland, OR, Seattle, WA, San Francisco, CA, or for highly qualified candidates you may work from a remote home office in the West Coast Time Zone with a willingness to travel periodically for team meetings or training.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
In this role, you will leverage internal UP gas utility program knowledge, industry and market intelligence, and product management expertise to build new products and increase the profitability of existing products. Key areas of responsibility include:
Product Management:
- Manage the entire gas utility product line life cycle, including closely managing the launch of a new product and evaluating the evolving market response and business case
- Determine customer needs and desires by conducting voice of customer interviews, secondary research, and other industry market research; leverage feedback and other data to support prioritization decisions
- Work with the UP Associate Director of Product Innovation to develop and manage a three-year roadmap for the gas utility product line to illustrate our vision into the future; ensure alignment with strategy, share progress towards goals, and celebrate accomplishments
- Identify new potential opportunities to align with the larger company mission and move them through the appropriate decision-making processes
- Determine product pricing by utilizing market research data, analyzing contribution margin, and collaborating with key stakeholders from UP Operations and Finance
- Assess and report on competitive landscape and other market trends
- Collaborate with B2B Marketing on product marketing activities, including the creation of positioning for your products
- Provide SME support to UP Solution Sales Manager in sales prospect meetings
- Support development of profit and loss statements and forecasts to support internal executive or board approvals and corporate financial forecasts
Product Development:
- Facilitate and manage the launch of new and planned gas utility products (e.g., clarifying responsibilities, requirements, timelines for deliverables, interdependencies, risks)
- Create product development plans, including time-bound deadlines with clear direction, deliverables and resources required
- Develop and implement tactical go-to-market strategies for introducing, marketing, and piloting new products with UP Business Development, B2B Marketing, and UP Program Management
- Lead project efforts while managing closely to forecasted P&L
- Collaborate internally to ensure success and buy-in of new products
Thought Leadership:
- Maintain and grow key relationships with utility stakeholders
- Work with our B2B Marketing team to author blog posts and support the development of original sales and marketing content
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and establishing personal networks

You are also a consummate team player, adept at managing relationships, collaborating and influencing across a variety of organizational functions. You have the following skills:
Required:
- 3+ years’ relevant experience in product management, marketing, or sales
- Bachelor's degree
- Adept at problem-solving through uncertain, ambiguous and complex situations
- Enthusiasm for product development and design with a keen eye for standardizing existing products, developing go-to-market product strategies, and keeping your finger on the pulse of relevant industry trends
- Exceptional organizational skills with a passion for project management
- Exceptional people skills and experience with developing and learning from client feedback and navigating relationships with a complex array of internal stakeholders
- A passion for serving client needs; joy in other peoples’ success; empathy and superior listening, emotional intelligence and people management skills
- Strong commitment to diversity and inclusion as a key driver to business success and demonstrated passion for our mission
Strongly Preferred:
- Deep domain expertise in utilities and/or carbon markets and/or renewable energy and the ability to apply that expertise to help utilities serve key end-customer groups (residential, small-to-medium business, commercial & industrial, municipal, university, etc.); alternatively, we may consider expertise in other environmental domains if it comes alongside experience in product management, sales or marketing
- Masters in Business Administration
- Cost management experience: budget/P&L
- Experience with customer relationship management systems (i.e., Salesforce)
**HOW WE DEFINE SUCCESS
**Within 30 days
- Build a working knowledge of 3Degrees' utility sector products and services and the products of 3Degrees’ Carbon Markets team
- Develop an understanding of 3Degrees’ existing utility partnerships
- Become familiar with the current go-to-market strategy and 3Degrees' positioning to target gas utility customers
Within 60 days
- Collaborate with the Associate Director for Utility Partnerships Product Innovation to go to market with a ready-to-launch product
- Be responsible for developing a work plan with specific, time bound metrics to track the market response to the new product, modify the product scope and/or pricing, and support updates to the new product business case as needed
- Understand implementation of 3Degrees’ new product development process
- Cultivate mutually beneficial relationships with multiple stakeholders (both internal and external) in support of product implementation
Within 90 days
- Continue managing, testing, and iterating the new product post-launch to determine whether an updated business case is needed as well as recommending feature changes or sunsets
- Start conducting voice of client interviews with current and prospective gas utility clients
- Start the process of developing the next set of new, planned product(s) through the product development process
- Develop a work plan to analyze, refresh and/or sunset legacy gas utility products
Within 6 months
- Successfully demonstrate your expertise and be recognized as the subject matter expert on UP’s suite of gas utility products
- Partner with the UP Associate Director, Product Innovation to complete a 3-year gas utility product roadmap
- Lead a new product review meeting with UP Leadership including a report out of product performance relative to established success metrics and recommendations for next steps on further product iteration, features changes or sunsets
