Students will assist Ecojustice program staff in all aspects of their work, which many include legal research, providing opinions, drafting letters and memoranda, analysis of legislation, including legislative history, and assisting in the review and response to inquires from the public.
Potential Role Responsibilities:
- Conducting extensive legal, policy and fact research and providing legal advice and analysis (opinions, draft letters, memoranda) on a variety of matters with primary focus being environmental and administrative law;
- Providing general litigation support (case development and research, assisting in drafting pleadings and submissions, preparing briefs of authorities, etc.);
- Providing general law reform support (reviewing developments in the law including legislative and regulatory process and history, providing advice and analysis);
- Responding to inquiries from members of the public about environmental law questions and issues which may include reviewing and analyzing information, identifying issues, conducting legal research, preparing memoranda and recommendations;
- Assisting Communications and Philanthropy staff as can be reasonably accommodated;
- Interacting with clients and non-governmental environmental organizations;
- Maintaining an up-to-date records of time and activities through timekeeping software, including reporting lobbying and political activity;
- Following policies and processes as set out in the Ecojustice Staff Policy Manual and Program Policy Manual;
- Participating in regularly scheduled program and staff meetings; and,
- All other duties that may be required by the relevant provincial Law Society.
Role Success:
Typically, we find that people who succeed in this role bring:

- Related or transferrable experience in research and technical/legal writing.
- Knowledge of legislation processes in relevant jurisdictions.
- Awareness of environmental issues and familiarity with environmental and administrative law is an asset.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain legal and scientific information and concepts, as well as strong written communication skills that hi-light quality preparation of materials including, letters and memos of law.
- Flexibility, adaptability, good judgment and uses discretion in dealings with sensitive information.
- Commitment to working in a team environment, across disciplines, with individuals across Canada.
- Strong analytical skills to assess the applicability of legal principles and research.
- Demonstrated time management and the ability to deal with conflicting priorities and deadlines.
