Friends of the Earth’s Oceans and Vessels program works at the regional, national, and international level to initiate a sea change in the way shipping and other ocean polluters and their pollution streams are regulated. We work to protect coastal communities and marine life from harmful vessel air pollution, greenhouse gases, and the sewage, oil, and other water pollutants discharged from cruise ships, cargo ships, oil tankers, and other industrial operations.
What We Look For: A creative, engaging, collaborator who will help direct organizing, and advocacy efforts to reduce air pollution from port and freight activity Someone who has experience working on policy efforts at the local, state, regional and national levels to reduce air pollution from drayage trucks and ships at berth. If so, this is the position for you. We want you to succeed and we want to pay you a competitive wage that is in line with your experience. The salary range for this full-time remote role is $61,000-$65,000.This is a remote role, and the candidate can be located anywhere in the continental United States. Offers are determined based on relevant skills and experience required for the position.
What the Role Needs:
Dynamic Campaigner: Play a valuable role in supporting the development and implementation of strategic campaign plans. Assist in developing and implementing coalition-wide strategies to move to zero-emission port and freight operations in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Northwest Work with FOE’s Membership department to mobilize our base in support of policies and actions that further zero-emission and electrification efforts at ports and freight facilities and address the social and environmental impacts of goods movement in the Mid-Atlantic, Southeast, and Northwest regions. Assist SWEA (South Ward of Newark, NJ) achieve policy goals by devising and implementing policy recommendations
Community Champion: Participate in portside group coalitions. Support and build the power of local communities impacted by ports and freight by expanding their capacity, advancing their demands, and amplifying their voices in a respectful manner. Represent Friends of the Earth before policymakers, in media interviews, and at public events to support campaign objectives. Support foundation and other donor fundraising responsibilities. Interface with SWEA on their hyperlocal air-monitoring network rollout and data synthesis and analysis.
Strategic Research-Based Communicator: Conduct skilled research and analysis to develop letters, reports and articles, factsheets, web-content and other campaign materials on port and freight matters, to support coalitions and allies; and persuade opinion leaders, policy makers, the press and the public. Engage and educate regulators, port officials, and elected representatives on the need for emission reduction technologies and programs for drayage trucks (e.g., battery-electric pilots) for the ports in the targeted regions.
