Policy & Advocacy Organizing Coordinator

Reports to: Director of Policy & Advocacy Status: Full-Time Hourly, Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY:

Social Justice Learning Institute (SJLI) is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the education, health, and well-being of youth and communities of color by empowering them to enact social change through research, training and community mobilization. We do this by building capacity for individuals and communities to advocate for their needs, train and build leaders, educate and empower youth and community members to identify and rectify injustice,  and deliver effective programs, resources and support that help advance our mission.

Working closely with other members of the Policy & Advocacy team and reporting to the Director of Policy & Advocacy, the Policy & Advocacy Outreach & Engagement Coordinator is responsible for establishing and maintaining communication engagement and outreach channels with community members about SJLI’s policy and advocacy activities.  This includes volunteer recruitment and management, engaging with partner organizations, building and facilitating virtual outreach channels, and other activities related to community member outreach and engagement that can support SJLI efforts and duties as assigned. This role is a full-time hourly non-exempt position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain coalition involvement and participation on behalf of SJLI

    • Coordinate attendance and transportation of SJLI youth leaders to coalition events and activities
    • Attend and report on all monthly convenings
    • Attend and report on weekly coalition meetings
  • Assist with internal programing for SJLI’s Youth Leadership Development Pipeline

    • Attend all Urban Advocates convenings
    • Attend all in-person Youth Justice Fellowship trainings
    • Attend 7-day Youth Justice Fellowship International Tour
    • Assist in Youth Justice Fellowship data collection
  • Support SJLI’s Policy and Advocacy team in advocacy efforts around policy that aligns with our core mission and vision for the community.

  • Supporting SJLI’s community engagement sites, which include SJLI volunteer management.

  • Attending community, municipal, partner and media events, meetings and/or gatherings as assigned on behalf of SJLI.

  • Assist with monthly reporting on progress of projects and activities.

  • Participation in staff meetings and relevant work groups.

  • Conduct community outreach and marketing efforts for policy & advocacy activities and projects

  • Explore collaborative and partnership opportunities with community members, public agencies, nonprofit organizations and corporations

  • Develop key messaging and brand identity for outreach materials, including flyers, brochures, signage and reports

  • Photograph organizational activities and maintain photo/video library; recruit staff, residents and students to conduct interviews/stories for photo and video campaigns; coordinate and produce video that highlight SJLI programs and activities

  • Monitor analytics and create reports detailing the successes and failures of outreach campaigns and strategies

  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

The Policy & Advocacy Outreach & Engagement Coordinator will:

  • Be highly organized and detail-oriented, with 2-4 years of work experience, preferably in policy & advocacy and community based engagement,

  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Political/Social Sciences or similar degree OR have a minimum two (2) years of experience in outreach & engagement in underserved communities.

  • Have an interest in promoting advocacy and engagement amongst their peers.

  • Have a commitment to the goals, guidelines, and principles of the Social Justice Learning Institute.

  • Be able to work with a cooperative, mature, and nonjudgmental attitude towards sensitive health and wellness topics (must be comfortable discussing these issues openly with peers).

  • Superior time management and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines

  • An analytical mind and ability to think critically

  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills

  • Must maintain confidentiality.

  • Have a valid California Driver’s License.

  • Have access to a vehicle.

  • Be able obtain live scan clearance.

  • Attend team and staff meetings/training.

  • Strong passion for SJLI’s vision for social justice and equity; mission to improve the education, health, and well-being of youth and communities of color by empowering them to enact social change through research, training and community mobilization
  • The ability to obtain a passport for international travel

COVID Workplace Safety Requirements

This position is currently hybrid with remote and in office activities, 5 days a month. Occasional requirements include interacting with employees, donors, vendors and others who may or may not be vaccinated or recently tested. You can wear personal protection equipment (PPE) at your discretion. SJLI adheres to the directives provided by the LA County Department of Public Health protocols. Currently, weekly COVID testing is offered to all SJLI team members, as part of our COVID-19 Prevention Plan.
