E3G is looking for a Policy Advisor to support its Clean Economy Programme in driving our strategy on steel sector transition with a focus on co-convening the European Fossil Free Steel Network. This role is based in E3G’s Berlin office.

Role
Based in the Clean Economy Team, this Policy Advisor role will lead E3G’s strategy on accelerating steel sector decarbonisation and transformation in Europe and beyond. The successful candidate will work to activate a wider community of organizations on steel decarbonisation, co-convene and coordinate the European Fossil Free Steel Network, identify hooks for campaigning and closely follow international developments on steel. The role will combine coalition building with political analysis and engagement.
The European Fossil Free Steel Network is a network of over 200 civil society members from NGOs. think tanks and campaigning organisations, working towards accelerating steel decarbonisation in Europe. The network has highly developed channels to communicate the latest updates on steel decarbonisation and pursues collaborative action among its members to jointly push for the cleanest and fastest possible decarbonisation of the European steel industry.
The role will require experience working with civil society, government and industry stakeholders, and (ideally) a good understanding of industry decarbonization. However, we are open to candidates with experience and knowledge of other sectors (e.g. coal phaseout in the power sector, energy transition more broadly) who have experience in network convening and/or campaigning and are keen for a new challenge.
We are open to considering candidates with more senior profiles and can adjust the salary range based on the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
Key responsibilities
Lead on E3G’s strategy to accelerate steel decarbonization in Europe, in collaboration with the wider Clean Economy and EU teams;
Co-convene the European Fossil Free Steel Network together with Beyond Fossil Fuels, including convening civil society actors, undertaking analysis, understanding the politics of changing, building coalitions, aligning and coordinating campaigning efforts, and leading interventions around steel sector decarbonisation in Europe and international;
Monitor key policy debates and developments in Europe and internationally related to steel sector decarbonisation and industrial policy and interpreting them in the context of E3G’s work;
Engage with and helping to convene key stakeholders in government, civil society and the private sector;
Organise and participate in stakeholder discussions and workshops; managing relationships with stakeholders;
Contribute to the wider development of E3G as an organisation;

Experience and skills
The successful candidate will bring relevant professional experience with progressive levels of responsibilities and a track record of achievements in the following areas:
Have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline (required) and post-graduate qualification in a relevant discipline (desirable).
Demonstrate a keen interest in working on steel sector decarbonization and an understanding of European climate and energy policy more broadly. You bring expertise and established networks in at least one of these areas.
Have a track record of problem solving, research and strategy development. You are able to familiarise yourself with a new topic and come to evidence-based judgements.
Demonstrate a track-record of building new stakeholder relationships and partnerships (required);
Be a strong team player, pay attention to detail and work effectively to support shared team outcomes.
Have very strong written communication skills and impeccable English.
Be confident influencing decision-makers from government, business, finance and civil society.
Used to operating within diverse teams, with a high degree of cultural sensitivity.
At least 3-5 years of relevant professional experience

E3G offers a reward and benefits package which compares well with other organisations within our sector. The indicative salary range in Berlin for this position is up to € 45,000.00 – € 50,450.00 dependant on experience.
Yearly process for remuneration review.
E3G is unable to provide any relocation assistance to candidates who would need to move in order to take up this position. Occasional international travel may be required from time to time.
