Scope

IISD hosts the Secretariat of the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Metals, Minerals and Sustainable Development (IGF). The Policy Advisor will support the work of the IGF Secretariat. The Policy Advisor will contribute to the implementation of policy research and outputs, analysis for evidence-based policies, and the delivery and development of projects across all IGF programs. Work will include promoting responsible mining practices in the artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector.

The candidate should enjoy diversity in their workday and have a passion for learning. International travel will be required. The Policy Advisor will report to a Senior Advisor, IGF.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct primary and secondary research and write policy outputs to the required standard, including policy briefs, research reports, case studies, and technical reports.
  • Collaborate with IGF Secretariat staff, partners, and consultants in the design and implementation of ASM research, training, and capacity-building programs.
  • Prepare, present, and communicate high-quality research and report findings to a variety of audiences, including IGF member governments.
  • Support the organization and documentation of webinars and meetings as required.
  • Support Secretariat outreach and engagement with IGF member governments.
  • Support IISD’s membership in the European Partnership for Responsible Minerals.

Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related discipline (e.g., economics, geology, international development, law, or policy).
  • Working fluency in English. Working capacity in French or Spanish is considered an asset.
  • 5–10 years of related policy and research experience.
  • Experience undertaking primary and secondary research and strong analytical skills.
  • Superior writing skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines, work collaboratively with a multicultural team, and take the initiative in advancing or leading projects with minimal supervision when needed.
  • Experience related to sustainable development, international development, mining, and/or resource governance.
  • Experience related to ASM is considered an asset.

Location: Geneva/UK/Germany/Portugal/Other Mainland European Countries

Salary

Geneva: CHF 91,500 – 106,500

UK: GBP 44,200 – 50,900

Germany: EUR 52,600 – 66,500

Portugal: EUR 42,900 – 54,200

Other Mainland European countries: Remuneration will commensurate with experience, skills and location

Type of employment:  Full-time position

Duration:  2 years, with the possibility of becoming indefinite

Start date: As soon as possible

Closing date: February 16, 2024.  Recruitment will be on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
